Presentation on theme: "What science we’ve learned so far:"— Presentation transcript:

1 What science we’ve learned so far:
Scientists make observations. Observation = data gathered using one’s senses or tools that enhance the senses. Quantitative: involving numbers Qualitative: involving features or characteristics (like size, shape, color, texture, what it’s made of, condition, etc.)

2 Science we’ve learned so far
Scientists ask a lot of questions. Levels of Questioning: Level one: basic facts Level two: more complex, research needed Level three: questions that challenge findings and demand evidence, questions that address larger themes like ethics

3 Example: L1: What is cloning?
L2: What scientific knowledge is required to clone an organism? L3: How should we decide whether or when to clone?

4 Our own science questions
Ecology and environment How does global warming cause a heat wave? Why is there so much grass? What causes acid rain? What causes global warming? How can we make recycling more fun? How can people stop global warming? Why does snow fall?

5 Cells Why do skin cells regenerate? How does such a tiny thing as a cell hold so much information? How can cells hurt us? Why are there so many different kinds of cells? What’s the difference between plant cells and animal cells?

6 Genetics/DNA Whose DNA is stronger, mom or dad? If neither parent has a particular characteristic, how does the child end up with that characteristic? How are diseases inherited? How do twins form? How did so many races come to be? Can DNA tell if you are related to someone?

7 Evolution Are humans descended from apes? Do people believe in evolution more than the Bible? Will humans ever go extinct? Where do organisms come from? What will come after humans in evolution?

8 What we’ve learned in literacy
Levels of Questioning Right in text Inference – text and background knowledge World view – big themes, your ideas about the world, and text evidence Annotation

9 Our classroom community
Acuerdos Rules Consequences Procedures Norms

10 Group Task 1. Come up with 3 expectations for yourself, and as a group 3 expectations for Ms. Zaccor and for each other 2. Use your Classroom Community handout to figure out what will happen in each scenario Due today! Each person: handout on expectations Each group: solution to scenarios

11 Roles Leader—Review task, remind group of norms when needed, call on people so all take turns Reader—Reads all text involved in task out loud Summarizer—When group has come to an answer, states the answer that is to be recorded Writer—writes down answer for group Focus norm: All take turns

12 Exit slip How well did your group do in meeting the focus norms for today? How can you improve the next time? Homework – Due Friday Write me a letter that will help me get to know you – your interests and talents, your hopes for this year, what kind of help you might need, etc. The letter should be about a page long. Quiz on classroom community Friday
