Description of target group Literacy course 8 illiterate (2 female, 6 male; age: years) No certificates, lower education School drop outs Unemployed people

Experiences with first group discussion Preparing Acceptance of the project by trainers/teachers = best condition for success of discussion Sit in on classes = good preparation for both interviewer and learners Introduction by interviewer to the learners getting to know each other building up confidence

Experiences with first group discussion Carrying out Participants were very kind and open-minded Concept/outline works – “it stands the test”

Criteria for analysis – some remarks and first suggestions Target group has a lot of experiences within the field of visual learning of which they are (partially) very aware. Partially the learners themselves explored this during the discussion. There are some “visual experts” who compensated their reading and writing problems - e.g. targeted listening and watching the news on radio or television for better understanding of reading newspapers

Criteria for analysis – some remarks and first suggestions e.g. remembering directions in the city by memorizing “symbols” like advertisement at a crossing (because they cannot read signs). Learners have no knowledge about their learning style or learning preferences – they are not aware of it!

Recommendations for further group discussions Careful preparation: introduction of project, involvement of trainers/teachers Sit in on classes let a discussion emerge: do not be afraid if there are pauses, initiate/encourage the discussion if necessary getting to know each other following the instructions of the outline!
