1 Five-Year Experience With Routine Use of Healon5 in Cataract Surgery
Ann Haustermans, MD AZ KLINA Hospital Brasschaat, Belgium Ladies and gentlemen, It’s a real pleasure for me to share with you the interim data from a multi-centre study of a new aspheric IOL, the Akreos Advanced Optics IOL. This study is currently ongoing in Europe and I represent the Belgian centre involved.

Ladies and gentlemen, It’s a real pleasure for me to share with you the interim data from a multi-centre study of a new aspheric IOL, the Akreos Advanced Optics IOL. This study is currently ongoing in Europe and I represent the Belgian centre involved.

3 Purpose To present the author’s five year experience with routine use of Healon5 in coaxial and bimanual phaco surgery. The Akreos Advanced Optics IOL is based on the Akreos Adapt lens that has been on the market for over six years now. It is made of the same hydrophilic acrylic polymer and has four haptics to ensure stability and centration in the capsular bag. The knobs on two of the haptics provide indicators as to the anterior or posterior orientation of the lens. In addition, the Adapt AO lens offers a 360° posterior square edge in order to reinforce its mechanical barrier against PCO formation.

4 Methods Healon5 was routinely used between December 2002 and October 2007 in approximately 1300 cases of coaxial and bimanual phaco. All records of the surgery and intra- and postoperative complications were evaluated. The Akreos Advanced Optics IOL is based on the Akreos Adapt lens that has been on the market for over six years now. In addition, the Adapt AO lens offers a 360° posterior square edge in order to reinforce its mechanical barrier against PCO formation.

5 Methods (cont’d) To facilitate creation of the capsulorhexis, a small amount of regular Healon is used in the pupillary area underneath the Healon5.

6 Results Healon5 is a viscoadaptive OVD with unique properties, offering excellent control during the different steps of cataract surgery. Healon5 demonstrates a superior ability in deepening the anterior chamber, enlarging inadequately dilated pupils and maintaining a working space for phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. 7 Results (cont’d) In all of the approx cases, the capsulorhexis was completed successfully with not a single case of tearing out of the anterior capsule. In 19 eyes where irisprolaps occurred, Healon5 helped to reposition the iris and deepen the anterior chamber. No intra- or postoperative complications related to the use of Healon5 occurred. 8 Conclusion Thanks to its unique properties, Healon5 is an essential surgical tool in routine cataract surgery, offering excellent control during each step of the procedure.
