Nonrenewable and Renewable
The Earth’s Resources Nonrenewable and Renewable
2
What are resources? Natural resources are things that come from the earth that are useful to people. Rocks, oil, water, minerals, soil, lumber, and coal are all examples of natural resources. People use these resources in many different ways.
3
Kinds of Resources When we study natural resources, we put them into 2 groups: nonrenewable and renewable. Nonrenewable resources are available in a limited supply, and once they are used up, they are gone forever. Renewable resources can be replaced or are inexhaustible or unlimited.
4
Nonrenewable Resources
Resources that will eventually be used up are nonrenewable. Once they are used up, they are gone forever! Some examples of nonrenewable resources include: petroleum (oil/gasoline) natural gas coal minerals and precious stones
5
Nonrenewable Resources
Most nonrenewable resources formed inside the earth over millions of years. Because they took so long to form, they cannot be remade in time for us to use them. That’s why it’s so important for us to conserve them or use them wisely and not wastefully.
6
Conserving Resources When we conserve resources, we try to avoid wasting them so they will last as long as possible. Conserving resources also keeps our planet clean and healthy. It’s not hard to conserve resources! Carpooling to save gas, turning off the water while you brush your teeth, and recycling are all ways to conserve resources. Can you think of others?
7
Renewable Resources Renewable resources can be replaced or are inexhaustible, which means they will never run out. Some examples of renewable resources are: solar energy wind water plants and animals
8
Inexhaustible Resources
If a resource is inexhaustible, it will never run out. (Think of it this way, a runner who never gets exhausted can run forever!) Unfortunately, there aren’t many inexhaustible resources. Some are: solar energy wind
