3. Imperialism and Mercantilism
Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Colony: An area under the political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country. Mercantilism: An economic system where an imperialistic mother country exploits the resources of its colonies for profit.

The encomienda system in Spanish (Latin) America was similar to feudalism. Spanish nobles forced Natives to do labor. After Bartholome de las Casas wrote a letter of complaint to the King of Spain, the New Laws of the Indies were created, banning the system  increase in African slaves.
