1
Survival of plants in the winter
By: Alex Dichterenko And Brad Zuk
2
Acclimation adaptation to a new climate (a new temperature or altitude or environment) Starts late summer (when the days get shorter/nights get longer) Chemical change occurs causing plants to withstand colder temperatures
3
A Process Acclimation is a process which when started certain metabolic changes take place. respiration increases protein levels increase enzyme activity increases water level drops starch levels doubles level of ATP (the plants energy source) increases leaves drop
5
What is happening Water moves from the cell membrane past the cell wall to the spaces in-between the cells The water freezes forming ice crystals outside More space for the crystals so as not to puncture the cell wall The more airspace the lower temperature a plant can survive
6
Each Plant Is Different
Plants acclimate different, depending all different factors, such as type and climate. Evergreens are believed to still photosynthesize because they never loose their needles. Weather also can play I vital role on whether or not a plant survives.
