Is it fair that Saul’s sin of sacrifice (and later more sacrifice) cost him his kingdom, while Davids sins (again – covetousness, adultery, lying, drunkenness and murder) Psalm 51 explains how David got forgiveness

Repentance Only by repentance can we have forgiveness Qualifiers of forgiveness 1) The mercy of God through Christ 2) Having forgiven others of their sins 3) Repentance Mt 6:14 "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 "But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Repentance Repentance: regret plus commitment Regret alone = no forgiveness Esau – Hebrews 12:15-17 Judas – Matthew 27:4-5 Heb 12:15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; 16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears. Mt 27:4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

Repentance Repentance: regret plus commitment Regret alone = no forgiveness Change alone = no forgiveness Cease from sin for practical purposes Saul – 1 Samuel 15:30 1Sa 15:30 Then he said, "I have sinned; but please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and go back with me, that I may worship the LORD your God."

Real Regret How do you measure sincere regret? 1. It accepts the weight of the sin “For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me”

Real Regret How do you measure sincere regret? 1. It accepts the weight of the sin 2. It expresses a broken heart for sin “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise”

Real Regret How do you measure sincere regret? 1. It accepts the weight of the sin 2. It expresses a broken heart for sin 3. 17 A Personal Exam Have you committed atrocious sins? You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? James 4:4a

A Personal Exam Have you committed atrocious sins? "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court” Matthew 5:22

A Personal Exam Have you committed atrocious sins? I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:28

A Personal Exam Have you committed atrocious sins? Are you so different than David? Lying, envying, coveting? Lust = Adultery Hate = Murder

A Personal Exam Have you committed atrocious sins? Are you so different than David? Have you begged God for forgiveness? Have you offered a broken heart sacrifice? Have you forgiven the sins of others?

Psalm 51 David offers hope for forgiveness - We must desperately want it - We must accept the weight of our sins - We must offer God what He desires - We must see the sins of others
