Figure 1 Proposed model for liver T-IC–mediated hepatocarcinogenesis. Tumorigenicity and metastatic potential of liver T-ICs depend on the acquisition of specific traits: switch from quiescence to proliferation, self-renewal, differentiation ability, and infiltrative capacity that may lead to development of a chemoresistant and metastatic HCC. As explained in the text, several cell-surface markers, pathways and fate-determining regulatory factors may be involved in the acquisition of these traits.
