Limiting Reactants
2
Stoichiometry Review ___H2 + ___N2 ___NH3
If I have 45 grams of N2, how many moles of NH3 can I make? ____________
3
Limiting Reactants Atoms and molecules have to react with each other to produce different compounds; sometimes there is extra
4
Limiting Reactants You’re making Ceviche for your boo’s birthday and the recipe calls for 3 kg of halibut fish, 3 red onions, 3 aji amarillos (peruvian peppers), 30 limes. Add cilantro/salt/pepper/ginger to your own taste. Serves 15 If the store only has 2 kg of halibut, how many of each other ingredient do you need? How many people can you serve?
6
Limiting Reactant (Reagent) is the reactant that determines how much of the products are made
7
Theoretical Yield is the maximum amount of product that can be produced, based on the limiting reagent Excess Reagent is some leftover product after the limiting reagent is completely used up
8
1. Balance the Chemical Equation
2. Choose one reactant (A) 3. Use stoichiometry to figure out how many of other reactant (B) you need 4. If based on A, you need more B than you have, then B is your limiting Reactant 5. If based on A, you need less B than you have, then A is your limiting reactant Always use the limiting reactant for all of your calculations
9
___H2 + ___O2 ___H2O You have 5.0 grams of H2 and 10.0 grams of O2 How many grams H2O can you make? Which reactant is the limiting reactant?
10
__CH4 +__O2 → __CO2 + __H2O You have 12g of CH4 and 133g of O2 Which is the limiting reagent How many grams of CO2 can you produce?
