ENERGY & RATES OF REACTION
CHAPTER 9
2
RATES OF REACTION Rates of reaction refers to how quickly or slowly a chemical reaction happens. There are several factors which can increase or decrease the rate of a reaction.
3
TEMPERATURE Heating will increase the rate of reaction because the heat causes the particles to move faster. As they move faster, they have more contact with other particles. Cooling causes the opposite to happen, so they mover slower.
4
CONCENTRATION Increasing the concentration of the chemical allows more particles available for contact with each other. More contact means faster reaction.
5
SURFACE AREA Increasing the surface area increases the rate of reaction because more of the chemical surface is exposed for contact with other particles.
6
Catalysts Catalysts speed up chemical reactions without permanently changing the catalyst.
7
INHIBITORS Inhibitors combine with the reactants to slow down or prevent reactions from happening.
