Operation Barbarossa

When Did Hitler Attack? On June 22, 1941 Hitler decided to break the German-Soviet Non-aggression Pact and invade the Soviet Union. The code name for this was Operation Barbarossa. White Arrows-Soviet Union Black Arrows-Germany

Why Did Hitler Attack? Hitler wanted lebensraum or living space for his Master Race, he also wanted the country's resources. Hitler also wanted to get rid of the Soviet Union as a military power and exterminate communism.

What Happened During the Attack?
Hitler used Blitzkrieg but on a much larger scale when he launched his attack on the Soviet Union. He greatly underestimated the Soviet Union and their will to fight. Hitler’s Soldiers were not ready for the country's cold winters but the troops of the Soviet Union were. The Soviet Union also kept retreating deeper and deeper into the country which exhausted Nazi troops and used up their resources.

Significance Once Hitler attacked the Soviet Union and failed to take it over he knew he had made a major mistake. First he had to fight the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front which was not an easy task, and second the allies were advancing on him on the western front. The two front war Hitler had tried to avoid.
