1 Which INSPIRE download service to implement?
Michael Lutz, Alexander Kotsev TG Data meeting February 2018

2 Principles Data should be collected only once
Possible to combine seamless data from different sources GI for good governance at all levels should be readily and transparently available Focus on information relevant for governance GI should be easily discoverable, together with its metadata Distributed Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)

3 Types of network services

4 Download services Two types of services
„… services, enabling copies of spatial data sets, or parts of such sets, to be downloaded and, where practicable, accessed directly“ Article 11 (2007/2/EC) Two types of services Predefined (download and describe whole datasets) Direct access (describe and access to spatial objects through query) Operations (Request/Response) are described in the INSPIRE Network Service regulation

5 Service implementation
Multiple options Service implementation Predefined dataset Direct access SOS X WFS Х WCS Atom

6 ATOM Based on Advantages Disadvantages
IETF RFC 4287 The Atom Syndication Format OpenSearch Description Document format Advantages Very easy to implement Full example available in TG Works with standard web servers Disadvantages No support for direct access operations Large datasets might need to be split

7 Web Feature Service Technical Guidance based on WFS 2.0
Exposes complex GML Advantages Well supported by multiple server and client implementations Support for interaction with datasets (queries) Disadvantages Many implementation options Size of response might be problematic Alternative encodings to be available in WFS 3.0

8 Web Coverage Service Technical Guidance based on WCS 2.0
Suitable for multi-dimensional coverage data Typical examples 1-D temperature (time series or vertical profile) 2-D elevation, precipitation, imagery, x/y/t image timeseries and x/y/z geophysical voxel data 4-D x/y/z/t weather data. Advantages Powerful operations for ‘trimming’ and ‘slicing’ Support for heterogeneous coverage structures Disadvantages No backwards compatibility between WCS 2.0 is not (yet) widely supported Limited (still) client support

9 Sensor Observation Service
Technical Guidance based on SOS 2.0 and O&M Suitable spatio-temporal data from sensors Several specialized observation types are defined Advantages Serve spatio-temporal data Support for specialized observation types Disadvantages Definition of a dataset? Huge responses
