2 Agenda Visualization Basics (10 min) Power BI Overview (10 min)
Power BI Exercise (30 min) Debrief (10 min)

3 What Is a Visualization?
A visualization is the use of shapes, colors, and text to communicate insight or information in a manner that is more efficient and effective than traditional text-based presentations of data. Data visualizations help discover and communicate trends, patterns, and correlations in ways that are faster and more impactful than other methods of analysis. Visualizations allow us to identify things more quickly. For example, simply highlighting the 5’s in a series of numbers allows us to identify them much more quickly than manually searching the data.

4 What Are We Visualizing?
Comparison — evaluation or measure of the similarity or dissimilarity of values of one or more data points. Composition — presentation of the individual parts that make up the whole to show the relative size of each part in relation to each other and the whole. Relationship — demonstration of the correlation or connection of two or more variables. Distribution — display of disaggregated parts of a whole to show how they are distributed or disbursed across a common scale.

5 Common Types of Visualization
Pie Chart Visualization that divides the entire range of values in a dataset into a series of intervals and then counts how many values fall into each interval. Visualization in which one measure is on the vertical axis and another measure is on the horizontal axis. The population is plotted relative to each data point’s corresponding location on both axes. Visualization that uses vertical or horizontal rectangles to display numerical comparisons across categorical dimensions. Visualization in which a circle is divided into sectors that each represent a proportion to the population as a whole.

6 Power BI Overview

7 Power BI – Overview Capabilities
Quick Data Load The data load and refresh process is quick and allows you to load different data sources into Power BI In addition to data load, formulas and steps can be used in Power BI to allow for repetitive changes to be made in the tool instead of the data source each time Ability to Create Interactive Visuals Simple to create and toggle through different types of data visualizations Interactive visuals make it quick to drill-through different views to see the underlying data Quick Insights Gain insights into the whole population within seconds after creating visualizations Using different formatting capabilities, it is easy to show different aspects of data in an easy to read visual

8 Power BI – Important Information Getting Started
Data Preparation in Excel We recommend doing as many data prep and clean up as possible prior to loading data into Power BI Power BI Updates & Preview Features Make sure to always download the latest version of Power BI! If you go to File> Options & Settings> Options > Preview Features, you can make sure to check off some of the newly released changes Other Important Information For more information and how-to videos, check out the Power BI – Guided Learning portal

9 Power BI – Important Information How to Install
Power BI Desktop can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft site: started/?&OCID=AID719832_SEM_bHb24t0B&lnkd=Google_PowerBI_Brand&gclid=E AIaIQobChMIrsTAjaml4AIV1YuzCh2Xvg4_EAAYASAAEgKBwPD_BwE

10 Power BI Exercise You will need 02 Green Dot Coffee Sample and 03 Facilitator Demo Guide for this section.

11 Background You have just been assigned a new client, Green Dot Coffee (the “Company”). Green Dot Coffee is a private company that owns and operates coffee houses through the United States. The engagement senior has assigned you the task of analyzing the Company’s portfolio in the New York City area. Create visualizations to analyze the population in order to gain insights about the population characteristics. What will you need? Microsoft Power BI Desktop Green Dot Coffee – Power BI Exercise – Data File.xlsx Green Dot Coffee – Power BI Exercise - Handout.docx Refer to the Tips in the handout for help along the way!
