Protocol description (randomized phase). All patients received the induction regimen and high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue. Patients were randomized to either the early group (autologous costimulated T-cell product on day 2 after the second stem cell rescue) or the late group (autologous costimulated T-cell product on day 90 after the second stem cell rescue). The conjugated 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine and the inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine were administered on days 12 and 60 after the second transplant. Evaluations of immunologic function were conducted at the time of diagnosis and on days 30, 60, 90, 120, and 365.
