Remaining pieces of firewood surrounding a curing barn in southern Tanzania.
Remaining pieces of firewood surrounding a curing barn in southern Tanzania. An estimated tractor-load of wood (approximately 3 tonnes of solid wood) taken from common woodlands was used to cure the total harvest of tobacco grown on fields around the barn in the 1997/98 season. The hills in the background have been denuded for about 35 years, because of overcutting for tobacco curing. Helmut J Geist Tob Control 1999;8:18-28 ©1999 by BMJ Publishing Group Ltd
