1 Do Now Think about (honestly) and write down: In your seat:
When the bell rings After the bell (2 min) Think about (honestly) and write down: What did you do well 3rd quarter? What do you need to do better for the 4th quarter? In your seat: With pen/pencil With Notebook With Handout With homework Ready for Do Now Still needs Do Now

2 Agenda  Do Now (5 min) Warm Up (15 min)
Notes: Single Replacement Reactions (30 min) Demonstration: Electroplating a Paperclip (15 min) Independent Practice(15 min) Exit Slip (5 min) Closeout (2 min)

3 Fill in the missing info…
# Formula Name Type of Bond 1. Butane I or C or Both 2. Carbon Tetrafluoride 3. NaOH 4. KF 5. MgCl2 6. KNO3 7. HI 8. Sulfuric Acid 9. CoBr2 10. Manganese (IV) Oxide Warm Up (Part #1)

4 Warm Up (Part #2) I was hit in the head over the weekend and I can’t remember if these are right. Ca(OH)2  Calcium Dihydroxide C2H4 Dicarbon Tetrahydride CBr4 Carbon (IV) Bromide K2(SO4) Potassium Sulfur Oxide CO Monocarbon Monoxide

5 Unit: Acids & Bases Topic: Single Replacement and Electroplating
Objectives: Understand how an acid reacts with metals Explain the process of electroplating and how it is used

6 Guiding Question Why is the Statue of Liberty green?

7 Vocabulary and Definitions
Electroplating: The deposit of a thin layer of a metal on an object Electrolysis: A process using electricity to cause a chemical change Corrosion: Corrosion is the irreversible damage or destruction of a material due to a chemical or electrochemical reaction. Patina: A surface coating that develops on metals and protects from corrosion

8 KP #1: Single Replacement Reactions
When a single element reacts with a compound Single element must be more reactive to swap Use activity series to determine if a reaction will occur Example: HCl + Na  ?

9 Turn and answer with a partner:
Place check mark if the metal reacts with the solution and write “NR” if no reaction

10 KP#2: Acids and Metals When acids react with metals a single replacement reaction occurs Not every metal reacts with acids The metal must be more reactive than Hydrogen Ex: HI + Ca  ? HCl + Pt  ?

11 KP#3: Electroplating What is electroplating?
Watch Answer the 4 questions on the reverse side of your notes

12 KP#3: Electroplating What is the purpose?? For a decorative finish
Protect a metal from corrosion What is the purpose??

13 KP#3: Electroplating What is corrosion?
What happens when oxygen (from the air) reacts with metals- you get rust as a result metals with a higher reactivity (like aluminum or magnesium) are more likely to corrode

14 KP#4: Electrolysis 3 Step Process
Battery starts a current of electrons (negatively charged) Electrons dissolve the metal into ions. Positively charged metal-salt ions in solution will bind and create a coating on the object.

15 Demo: Electroplating Paperclips
2 Steps: Place a dirty penny in a vinegar and salt mixture and remove Place a clean, new paperclip into the mixture and let it sit for a few hours.

16 Pre-Demo Discussion Turn and Discuss
What is the purpose of electroplating? In other words, what are we trying to prevent from happening? What do you think will happen when the pennies are added to the vinegar solution? What do you think will happen when the paper clips are added to the vinegar solution? Turn and Discuss Record your answers under your warm-up

17 Post-Demo Discussion Turn and Discuss
Describe the difference between the “before” and “after” pennies Describe the different between the “before” and “after” paperclips. Do you think the penny will stay clean? Do you think it would be easy to remove the copper coating from the paperclip? Turn and Discuss Record your answers under your warm-up

18 Demo Wrap-Up Turn and Discuss
What observations suggest that a chemical reaction took place?  Why did the nail turn a different color after being left in the copper vinegar solution? Why would manufactures want to electroplate a reactive metal such as steel in jewelry with a gold coating? What was the purpose of electroplating the steel nail or paper clip today? Turn and Discuss Record your answers under your warm-up

19 Independent Practice How What 10 minutes
C: 0 – 1, only on task conversation H: Raise hand, move on to next question until I am available A: Completing questions M: In clusters. 3 Hall passes. P: Answering questions on reverse side of notes, using notes, head up, asking questions of partners 10 minutes Complete practice on reverse side of notes

21 Exit Slip How What Is corrosion a chemical or physical change?
C: 0 – 1, only on task conversation H: Raise hand, move on to next question until I am available A: Completing exit slip M: In clusters. P: Answering exit slip questions, answers on scrap paper Is corrosion a chemical or physical change? Name a metal that would be replaced by Calcium Predict the products of the following reactants Cu + HF 
