Many of the letters (symbols) in the English alphabet appear in the Spanish alphabet, and there are some letters (or letter combinations) that appear in the Spanish alphabet that we do not have in the English alphabet. Each of the letters (symbols) have a name that tells us how the letter sounds. The Spanish letters have different sounds than English letters. Vowel Sounds A = ah E= a I = e O = oh U = oo The letter H is silent. J is like an H in English. Letters K and W are only found in words of foreign origin. In 1994, language academies of Spanish-speaking countries decided not to separate the letters Ch and Ll from C and L (as in dictionaries), but they are still unique sounds.
