1 St Bartholomew’s Primary School 2018/19
Parent Maths Workshop St Bartholomew’s Primary School 2018/19

2 Content of the Workshops
Workshop 1 – Addition & Subtraction Workshop 2 – Multiplication & Division Workshop 3 - Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

3 Aims of the Workshop To update parents on the primary maths curriculum. To outline the progression of the calculation methods and how these are taught at St Bartholomew’s. To provide parents with ideas that they can use at home to support children’s maths development.

4 Key Aims of the maths curriculum
Fluent recall of mental maths facts e.g. times tables, number bonds. Etc. To reason mathematically – children need to be able to explain the mathematical concepts with number sense; they must explain how they got the answer and why they are correct. Problem solving – applying their skills to real-life contexts.

5 Expectations of progress
All children will work at age-related expectations. Tasks in class will be differentiated to match the learning needs of the individual child. All children are expected to ‘master’ each strand of learning. Those children not making expected progress will receive additional support or intervention. More able mathematicians will work at ‘Greater Depth’ investigating the relationship between calculation and number to widen their understanding.

6 Good practice in mathematics
Connections are made between mathematics topic areas, other subjects and between objectives, so children can build on their understanding. Children are taught to reason mathematically so that they able to consider if their answers are plausible. Children are taught to consider the most effective calculation method and approach to calculations.

26 How you can help at home A focus on mental calculations.
The ability to estimate. To use maths in a real life context. To ask children to explain how they have calculated something using a method that suits them. Teach children written calculations following the progression in the calculations policy (given as a handout). Encourage children to problem solve using concrete apparatus or by representing their problem using the bar model method.
