1 Atomic Theory

2 What is an atom? What do atoms look like? What are they made out of?
What makes two atoms different?

3 Atoms are made out of… Protons Neutrons Electrons
How are they all held together?

4 Structure of the Atom Strong Nuclear Forces hold protons and neutrons together Electric forces hold the electrons and protons together Electric forces repel the electrons from each other

5 Particles and Forces

6 Structure of the Atom

7 What makes one atom different from another?
Turn to a partner, and for a couple of minutes, come up with some things that you think make one atom different from another.

8 Different Substances and Atoms
Different atoms have different numbers of protons. The number of protons in an atom is called the atom’s “atomic number.” The number of protons plus the number of neutrons is called the atomic mass.

9 Formulas Atomic Number = # Protons
Atomic Mass = # Protons + # Neutrons In a Neutral Atom: #Protons = #Electrons
