Early is superior to deferred preemptive lamivudine therapy for hepatitis B patients undergoing chemotherapy  George K.K Lau, Harry H.Y Yiu, Daniel Y.T Fong, Hoi-Ching Cheng, Wing-Yan Au, Lydia S.F Lai, Micheal Cheung, Hai-Ying Zhang, Albert Lie, Roger Ngan, Raymond Liang  Gastroenterology  Volume 125, Issue 6, Pages (December 2003) DOI: /j.gastro

2 Figure 1 Serial biochemical and serum HBV DNA in 8 HBsAG-positive group 2 patients who had an HBV virological reactivation. Seven patients (A—C and E—H) had hepatitis despite being started with lamivudine, and 1 patient had hepatic failure (C), which subsequently resolved, and lamivudine was subsequently successfully stopped. All 7 hepatitis (A–C and E–H) cases were accompanied by an upsurge of white cell counts from the nadir. Chemo, chemotherapy; lam, lamivudine; ALT, serum alanine aminotransferase; Bil, bilirubin; WBC, white blood cell count. Gastroenterology  , DOI: ( /j.gastro )

3 Figure 2 (A) Survival free from hepatitis B virological reactivation and (B) survival free from hepatitis due to hepatitis B virological reactivation in hepatitis B surface antigen-positive lymphoma patients who received intense chemotherapy and were treated with early (group 1, -•-•) and deferred (group 2, -○-○-) preemptive lamivudine therapy. Note that patients who had hepatitis B virological reactivation may not have developed hepatitis. Gastroenterology  , DOI: ( /j.gastro )
