3 Folders This is your English folder, to be kept in the classroom to hold your papers. Since I gave it to you, please do not take it with you. You will leave it in the crate/bin marked for your class each day. When you come into the room each day, pick up your folder from the bin. All papers handed back to you will go in this folder, as well as your Pass Forms and other information handouts. At the end of each period, you place the folder back in the bin.

4 Fire Drill Instructions
If we have a fire drill during this period, you are to stay together as a class and move quickly to the end of the faculty parking lot WE MUST STAY TOGETHER AS A CLASS ; I am required to take roll as soon as we get there To do so, you will follow my appointed leader and stay between that leader and me, as I will be the last one to exit the room. Rooms must stay unlocked during drills, so take your valuables with you. I will lead the way back to the room when the drill is over.

11 Agenda: Wed, 8/14 Use this time in class to complete your memoir and the questions on the back so you are ready to present it to the class tomorrow.

12 Questions to answer on back of memoir paper:
My Six-Word Memoir is … which means…. About me  MY WORK ETHIC COULD BEST BE DESCRIBED AS…  A SUBJECT I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT (OR CARE ENOUGH ABOUT TO ARGUE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE) IS….  WHEN I WORK IN A GROUP, I AM MOST PRODUCTIVE WHEN….  MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE (WHAT BOTHERS ME MOST) WHEN WORKING WITH GROUP MEMBERS IS…  I WORK BEST IN A GROUP WITH MEMBERS THAT…

13 Bellringer, Thurs., 8/15 Take these 5 minutes to add color/polish to your memoirs, or written explanation on back, if needed, before we begin the presentations.

14 NOTE-TAKING DURING PRESENTATIONS
Before presentations begin, get out a piece of notebook paper As your peers are presenting, take note of anyone you would like to work in a group with; you will use this information from your peers to choose your group members for the formative work done in class Groups will consist of 3-5 members who will work together on formative assignments during the year. All group members receive the same grade on the work done, so choose wisely.

15 PRESENTATION OF MEMOIR
When it is your turn to present, please show us your memoir visual and explain your six word memoir to us Also, tell us the information asked for on the back of your illustrated memoir, including the results of your group assessment When you are finished presenting, you will give the memoir to Mrs. Hicks.

16 Bellringer, 8/16 Sit in any chair—THIS IS NOT YOUR DESIGNATED GROUP YET!!! We will finish listening to presentations before we break up into our designated groups for the year.

17 3rd period: Check your name with me for attendance; then go to the auditorium for your class Discipline meeting.

18 After all presentations….
Everyone grab your things and stand up… Now it is time for you to decide who you want to work together with in a group. I will give you some time to collaborate and decide; when you have chosen your groups of 3-5 people, sit in one of the desk groups I provided. When your group has formed, fill in the group paper I give you with the members’ names. (If you are only a group of three, remove one of the chairs. If you are a group of five, grab one of the removed chairs and bring it over to your group. If there is an eighth group, meet at the table.)

19 Establishing norms… On the back of your group paper, write the norms for your working group. Norms: the agreed behavior/working system of the group. Some examples: --no side conversations; all work and conversation must be on the assignment only --everyone participates in the entire activity; we all decide the best way to accomplish the task and everyone does his/her part equally If we can’t agree, the majority rules and everyone complies --each person must do his/her part on time --no one says anything negative about someone else’s ideas; if we think an answer is not correct, we will respectfully explain why --we will get each other’s numbers so we can stay in communication outside the classroom --we stay on task at all times until the work is turned in

20 Group norms for all groups (by Mrs. Hicks)
These are the established norms for group work: Phones are put in the group basket before work begins (or on charging station) All participate; all opinions are respected; agree on answers before writing them Communicate only with your own group members; leave others alone during group work time If the teacher or another group is reporting or presenting to class, all individual group activity stops, and appropriate attention and respect is shown When group work is submitted, phones are returned

21 Sitting individually…
When seats are not assembled in group format, please sit in one of the chairs designated with your group’s number. This will be our seating chart for attendance purposes and to make it easier to assemble and disassemble groups as needed

22 Syllabus Sign Sheet Take home your syllabus and the sign sheet
