IF IF introduces a condition
– something which may or may not happen There are four main kinds of condition expressed by IF The present condition (0 conditional) the condition can be true at any time (B) The will–condition (1st conditional) predict a likely result in the future (C) The would–condition (2nd conditional) imagine a different present or future (D) The would-have-condition (3rd conditional) imagine a different past

IF IF + clause, main clause main clause, IF clause

In Zero conditional IF has the same meaning as WHEN
IF formulas In Zero conditional IF has the same meaning as WHEN or WHENEVER ZERO CONDITIONAL IF clause main clause IF + PRESENT SIMPLE + PRESENT SIMPLE Example : If I get up early, I get to school on time. I get up early, if I get to school on time. I get to school on time, if I get up early.

How do you feel if / when … ?
English XII : Unit 1 : 8 : Page 25 How do you feel if / when … ? … if you pass the math exam? … if you make a presentation in front of a lot of people? … if you wait a long time in a bank? … if you miss your bus or train? … if you lose your bag? … if you go and listen to a concert of your favorite band? … if you see a big insect? … when you are watching your favorite TV program at home? … if you go to the English speaking club? … when you have a summer holiday? …when you meet your friends?

In 1st conditional IF has a different meaning than WHEN
IF – maybe will maybe won’t WHEN – definitely will IF formulas In 1st conditional IF has a different meaning than WHEN FIRST CONDITIONAL IF + PRESENT SIMPLE + FUTURE Example : If I get up early, I will get to school on time. I will get to school on time, if I get up early.
6
IF formulas IF + PRESENT SIMPLE + FUTURE FIRST CONDITIONAL
If I have time, I am going to meet my teacher tomorrow. If he has time, he is going to meet his teacher tomorrow. If you don’t understand something, you should ask me. If you don’t understand something, ask me. If you want the songs, don’t forget to bring a flash disc. If you write on the desk, you must clean it yourself.
7
IF formulas + base Form verb IF + PAST SIMPLE + ‘would’
SECOND CONDITIONAL + base Form verb IF + PAST SIMPLE + ‘would’ Example : If I got up early, I would get to school on time. I would get to school on time, if I got up early.
8
COULD MIGHT IF formulas + base Form verb IF + PAST SIMPLE + ‘would’
SECOND CONDITIONAL + base Form verb IF + PAST SIMPLE + ‘would’ COULD MIGHT might Example : If I got up early I could get to school on time.
9
NOTE : You can use WERE for all forms of be in second conditional.
If I were a billionaire, I would live in a huge house. If my dad were president, he wouldn’t put up with the pollution in Ulaanbaatar. If you were the richest person in the world, what would you do?
10
IF formulas + PRESENT perfect IF + past perfect + ‘would’
THIRD CONDITIONAL + PRESENT perfect IF + past perfect + ‘would’ Example : If I had got up early, I would have got to school on time. I would have got to school on time, if I had got up early.
11
COULD MIGHT IF formulas + PRESENT perfect IF + past perfect + ‘would’
THIRD CONDITIONAL + PRESENT perfect IF + past perfect + ‘would’ COULD MIGHT might If I had got up early I could have got to school on time.
12
Extra notes : if not = unless I always do my homework, unless I forget. , if I don’t forget. if only = wish If only I were rich. as if = as though = like It feels as if the weather is getting colder.

We’re going to run out of petrol soon _____ you fill the tank up here. if B) since C) as D) when E) unless 2nd conditional 1st conditional
15
Your turn : In groups make 4 questions to test conditionals : 0, 1st, 2nd, 3rd
16
conditionals 0 – formula – example 1st - formula – example 2nd - formula – example 3rd - formula – example
