DUAL ENROLLMENT Program Overview
2
WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT ?
The Dual Enrollment gives qualified high school students ( 9th – 12th grade) the opportunity to earn college credits. Students are “concurrently” enrolled in high school and college (a postsecondary institution), full time or part time. Students earn both college and high school credits needed for graduation while working toward a college degree. A list of approved colleges can be found on GAFutures Technical colleges are open to 9th – 12. Students/parents are encouraged to check the school’s website to see who can be accepted into the MOWR program

WHERE CAN I ATTEND? University System Of Georgia Institutions
Technical College System of Georgia Institutions Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Accredited Private Colleges in Georgia To date, no student has expressed interest in applying to a private college/university List of approved private colleges – found on GAFutures website

WHAT ABOUT TRANSFER CREDIT?
It is the student’s responsibility to talk with colleges/universities regarding their Dual Enrollment policies. Georgia Public institutions tend to honor credit earned at any other Georgia public institution provided the student earned a grade of “C” or higher. Private colleges and out of state colleges vary on their acceptance of Dual Enrollment credit. Students need to understand that credit does not magically transfer. They should check transfer policies for both the school they will attend and the one to which they expect to transfer.
5
ELIGIBLE STUDENTS Must be classified as a 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader at Norcross High School Must apply to and be admitted by an accepted post secondary institution NO residency or citizenship requirements Participate through Spring of your senior year Take summer classes -Effective this fall, you must be full time (12 or more hours) at the college/university in order to take any physical education course. This does not apply to health -9th grader cannot take classes summer after 8th grade graduation. Can only matriculate at technical colleges for 9th/10th.

HOW DOES GRADING WORK? Failing a college course could jeopardize graduation and continued participation in the program! No points added to the final grade (exception – 10 pts. added to Georgia Tech’s distance learning program. All courses (passed or failed) are included on the high school transcript. Colleges tend to provide the high school with letter grades. The high school will transcribe the letter grade to the midpoint of the grading scale. A = 95 B = 85 C = 77 D = 72 F = 55 End of Course Tests (EOCs) NO LONGER REQUIRED beginning Fall, 2016. -Grades – if a student goes through the process of securing a numeric grade from the university on letter head, you may transcribe that grade. See GCPS policy and procedures -Grades earned through DUAL will be computed in determining a student's grade percent average using the following: The cumulative grade percent average will be computed as per local school rules, normally through the first semester of the senior year to determine honor graduates, valedictorian, etc. ..If a numerical grade is specified by the post-secondary institution, that grade will be accepted up to the numerical score of "100". ..When a student receives a letter grade with no numerical grade specified from a post-secondary school, the numerical grade will be computed by using the mathematical midpoint of the sending school’s numerical scale rounded to the next whole number. Should the sending school not use numerical grades, the mathematical midpoint rounded to the next whole number of the current Gwinnett County Public School scale will be used. .When the student receives a final letter grade of "F" with no numerical grade specified, a numerical grade of 55 should be transcribed. . .Should a student receive a letter grade only and feels that he/she would receive a higher numerical grade, the student may obtain a letter on post-secondary school letterhead in which the individual course teacher will specify a numerical grade no higher than "100". The letter must be signed by the instructor. The new numerical grade will be accepted in this case. .A student must take a minimum 12 semester hours the first semester of his/her senior year to be eligible for valedictorian, salutatorian and extra curricular activities. If students participate in no activities, or cannot possibly qualify for valedictorian, salutatorian, etc., they may take fewer than 12 semester hours subject to current dual enrollment rules.

FULL TIME OR PART TIME? WHICH IS BETTER FOR ME?
A student may choose to attend an institution full time or part time. Part time? Take at least one college course. Combine with classes at Norcross – best not to exceed six. Full time? Minimum of four college courses (between 12 – 15 credit hours). Take Academic and/or Elective courses. Take Personal Fitness(full)and/or Health (full/part)! Can take personal fitness if that institution offers it, but student must be full time at the college (12 hours). Be sure to match the course numbers.
8
HOPE and ZELL MILLER SCHOLARSHIPS
Dual Core courses – included in your HOPE high school GPA for both HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships Dual Core courses – meet Academic Rigor Requirements. Dual Core courses - weighted 0.5 Dual courses ARE NOT PAID FOR by HOPE – cap of 127 hours unaffected! When GSFC calculates HOPE/ZELL, it adds .5 to all PS classes…. Same as they do for AP/IB.
9
GRADE CONVERSON ► 1 - 2 semester hour college courses = .5 HS credit.
NOTE: Science labs will not receive credit. Labs cannot count towards the 4th science requirement. ***Science courses taken at the college should include a lab in order to count as a 4th science for graduation All 4 science classes must include labs. Student cannot repeat Biology I, Chemistry I, or Physics I and count them as the fourth science.
10
WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?
Students get a head start on college. Tuition and books are provided (student may have to pay course related fees). Courses offered Fall, Spring, and Summer. Enroll in more than one postsecondary institution. CONS Keeping up with Norcross High School information. Rigor? AP/IB versus college courses. 95% course grade versus a possible 110% in AP or IB. Colleges communicate with DUAL students, NOT parents. Transportation “W” or “WF” on transcripts AP/IB/Dual? Best for student to research admissions requirements for institutions they wish to attend.
11
BE AWARE!!! Students must meet the respective post secondary institution’s entrance requirements . Students must register for the correct courses that satisfy high school graduation requirements. Students must review the list of approved courses - DUAL course directory located on the GAFutures.org webpage. Students are responsible for ALL interaction with the college. Colleges tend not to speak with parents or the local high school’s DUAL Coordinator . Post secondary schedule changes of any kind must be approved by the High School Coordinator. Holidays (Spring Break, etc. ) will be different from Gwinnett County holidays. Register for the equivalent of 2.5 credits if participating in NHS extracurricular activities each semester. 2.5 credits for extracurricular activities is every semester
12
REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE
Must be a Norcross High School student The student and parent must attend an advisement meeting or session – this meeting counts!
