3 Jesus's desire for his disciples
Last week; Honoring your father and mother Naming the things you inherited from your parents Renouncing the negative things Choosing to live in the positive attributes Surrendering yourself to Jesus “I want you to have peace”- Jesus “I want you to live in forgiveness”- Jesus

4 The background to the story

5 Experiencing Forgiveness
2 Settings 1. Jesus appears to 10 disciples (no Thomas or Judas) Forgiving others You ALL abandoned me I forgive you! Is implied 2. Jesus' encounter with Peter by the sea

6 Jn 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

7 But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

8 Jesus's desire for his disciples
I want you to have peace I want you to forgive others Step one; Identify the negative Step two: reject the negative Step three: Repent of the negative Step four: Forgive those who cause you pain 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

9 John 21:9 So when they got out on the land, they
John 21:9 So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught...” 15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He *said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep. NASB

10 Jesus brought up the unspoken sin without bringing up the unspoken sin
Jesus' encounter with Simon (Peter); You promised you would never leave You said “Even if everyone else leaves I will never leave” 3 denials; 3 questions; Do you love me more than these? “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” Miffed to answer a third time.” Tend lambs, shepherd sheep, tend sheep.

11 Jesus is here establishing the ministry of “Shepherd” of the church
1 Peter 5:1-5 I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it’s like to be a leader, in on Christ’s sufferings as well as the coming glory. Here’s my concern: that you care for God’s flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God. Not calculating what you can get out of it, but acting spontaneously. Not bossily telling others what to do, but tenderly showing them the way.

12 Jesus is here establishing the ministry of “Shepherd” of the church
When God, who is the best shepherd of all, comes out in the open with his rule, he’ll see that you’ve done it right and commend you lavishly. And you who are younger must follow your leaders. But all of you, leaders and followers alike, are to be down to earth with each other, for— God has had it with the proud, But takes delight in just plain people. The Message Ezek 34:

13 If you are seeking peace
1. Forgive others/ extend forgiveness 2. Believe in Jesus 3. Accept God's forgiveness because of the cross 3. Forgive yourself 4. Empathize with others where they are in faith 5. “Shepherd” your people Children Work mates Friends

14 The background to the story

15 If you are seeking peace
God doesn't “wink” at sin. God designed forgiveness to require the cross There is no lasting forgiveness without the cross Imagine Jesus back on the cross Heb 12:2 ...Fix... our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross Peter, Thomas and the disciples “endured” the “enduring” of the cross Do you understand the pain Jesus suffered for you?

16 So What? Do you want forgiveness?...LOOK BACK AT THE CROSS! FORGIVE!
John 20:23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Do you want forgiveness?...LOOK BACK AT THE CROSS! FORGIVE! Who do you have trouble forgiving? List (on paper) what they have done to you. List (on paper) what you have done to others Ponder the pain of the cross that brought forgiveness When have you denied Jesus? When have you been “scattered?” Who came to look for you? Who do you need to “look for?” - to shepherd?
