Balboa uses imagery and simile to get through to his son. He opens by pointing at his hand and stating, “you used to fit right here.” This emphasizes the length of their relationship and the fact that as his father, he has seen him grow. His son likely feels guilt in the person he has become, or perhaps even the things he has not become. Balboa also says he is “like a shadow.” This implies that his son follows in others’ footsteps, but is incapable of his own movement. Balboa is suggesting that his child detach from his father, and become his own man.
