1 Social Studies Administrator Update
Thursday, September 10, 2015

2 Learning Target I can show my understanding of how my Social Studies teachers will be using Historical Thinking Skills, the HIPP Analysis, and the Workshop Model. In order to be able to do this, I must learn and understand what the district expectations are and how my teachers should be implementing Historical Thinking Skills what the district expectations are and how my teachers should be implementing the HIPP analysis how the Workshop Model is utilized in secondary Social Studies I will show I can do this by demonstrating my learning in my reflection by explaining with examples how each will be used by my teachers in their classes

3 Profile of a Graduate

4 Profile of an Educator

5 Instructional Expectations
Please put this at the front of your Journal Talk through the expectations and how they came about

6 What are you seeing? Keeping the Instructional Expectations in mind, take a few minutes to discuss with your table what you are seeing in your Social Studies Classes. What do the learning targets look like? Are journals being used? Is there evidence of the Workshop Model? Are teachers incorporating anchor charts and word walls?

7 Workshop Model in SS Things to be aware of…
The “recommended” breakdown of time will vary “Lecture” may be necessary from time to time this should not be the rule it should not take up the entire period there should still be student processing There might be multiple Work Time(s) and Closing(s) in a class period. The official lesson closing might be three or four days after the lesson starts (this doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t close each class) These % won’t always apply

8 Workshop Model in AP SS AP classes may be differentiated away from traditional workshop model even more. Work Time might be a socratic seminar Openings may be shorter practicing a skill already introduced taking a quiz that mimics a part of the AP exam If students are taking an exam, or writing an essay the workshop model will not be present as these are often bell to bell assessments.

9 Journals in SS Journals will be used in all NISD Secondary Social Studies classes Teachers should keep a journal for each of the courses that they teach as a model for students to follow Journals need to be a physical notebook of some sort and not a digital one Please glue the Journal expectations into the next page of your journal We want the journal to be used as a place for students to work through their thinking. This is NOT just a place to put notes.

10 Historical Thinking Skills
Used in ALL AP History Courses Students need to be comfortable with them prior to taking AP History Courses start with Compare and Contrast and Cause and Effect in 6th Grade add 1-2 more each year Paste these into your journal

11 Historical Thinking Skills
Chronological Reasoning Historical Causation Patterns of Continuity and Change over Time Periodization Making Historical Connections Comparison Contextualization Synthesis Creating and Supporting a Historical Argument Historical Argumentation Analyzing Historical Sources of Evidence (HIPP Analysis) Analyzing Evidence: Content and Sourcing Interpretation

18 Historical Argumentation
This HTS helps student develop their argument and in turn they are able to more clearly articulate their thesis statement. You should start seeing this in the 2nd and 3rd 6 weeks. Teachers will be trained on it during upcoming district PLCs. (7th or 8th grade and up)

19 “The rise of Egypt had greater significance to the course of world history than the rise of the Indus Valley Civilizations.” Support, Refute or Modify Support Refute Thesis not yet developed

20 H.I.P.P.Analysis Historical Context….Every time there is a document to analyze this should be a part of it. At least one of these three should be used in conjunction with the Historical Context. This will depend on the type of document and the task. THis to be used on a regular basis for document analysis I recommend you practice it with your students early in the year I will be looking for these in student Journals

23 DBQ Rubric Slightly modified from AP DBQ Rubric
All DBQs will be scored with this rubric Minimum 1 DBQ per semester as written into the curriculum All DBQs should be completed using the HIPP analysis on each document look at the rubric and see if you have any questions

24 Reflection Reflect upon what you should expect to see in your Social Studies teachers’ rooms. Be sure to include examples of when you might see Historical thinking skills and the HIPP analysis being used as well as what Workshop Model might look like.
