Persuasive Techniques (FEARR RISES) 1 Facts and Opinions Give evidence (examples, data, quotes) to back up the points you have made. 2 Emotive Language to provoke an emotional reaction in your reader, such as sympathy, anger and joy. For example: ‘Hundreds of starving puppies are cruelly abandoned in Britain every year!’ 3 Address the readers directly Pronouns such as ‘you’ and ‘we’ involve the reader 4 Repetition to emphasise your viewpoint 5 Rhetorical Questions to make the reader question their own viewpoint 6 Rule of 3 to emphasise: ‘It is tragic, dreadful and heart-breaking that animals should suffer this way’ 7 Imperatives give commands, rather than make suggestions, for example: ‘Take a break. Visit Alton Towers today.’ 8 Short Sentences for dramatic effect, e.g. ‘This must stop!’ 9 Exaggeration For example: ‘Everybody knows that all teenagers love pizza!’ 10 Superlatives the strongest form of adjectives (long, longer, longest). They are used to convince the reader that something is the best of its type. This unit will help you to: 1 Choose whether to write in a formal or informal way. 2 Choose which tense to use. 3 Think about the features of writing to persuade. 4 Select words and punctuation to create particular effects. Activities 1 Write your own example for each of the persuasive techniques in this knowledge organiser. 2 ‘The school day should be shorter.’ Write a persuasive paragraph persuading someone to agree or disagree with this statement. Include at least 3 persuasive techniques. Plan your persuasive writing 1 What reasons will your use to persuade someone to offer you a refund? 2 You may find it most effective to save your strongest reason until last. 3 How will you begin your letter? 4 Are you using a wide persuasive techniques throughout your letter to persuade someone to offer you a refund? 5 Remember to be polite, not aggressive. Technical Accuracy 1 Written in past tense. 2 Use a wide range of punctuation correctly and for effect. 3 Language – have you used a wide range of persuasive techniques? 4 Use a range of sentence styles – simple, compound and complex. 5 Use a range of sentence openers. 6 Use connectives to link your paragraphs.
