To set high standards for themselves for the next three years To do the very best that they can for the next three years To look back at their JC experience and have no regrets

6 Homework Essential part of school work
Positive study skill/habit essential for life long learning Improves thinking and memory To work independently Reinforces what was learned in the class Extension to learning in the class – HL students Affords parents an opportunity to see what their child is learning

7 How can you help? Environment – quiet, monitored
Make time – chat about school, subjects Reading – encourage it at all times Self-Esteem/Motivation – build confidence Discipline – have a system in place, routine Communication with the school – school journal Build Responsibility – independent learners A 1st Year student should have 1+hours of homework each night.

10 Study Study is important because it helps to develop a complete education: study habits, study skills, time management skills, self-discipline Study skills are the skills needed to enable a student to study and learn efficiently They are an important set of transferable life skills – not just for the Junior Certificate

11 Having a Study Plan As with homework, time spent studying will vary but at least 1-2 hours a night is required as they progress to 2nd and 3rd year

16 How else can you help your child prepare?

17 Brain Fit Healthy Body – Healthy Mind Regular Exercise
40 – 50 minutes of exercise 3 – 4 times a week Build it in to the study plan

18 Diet Plenty of fresh Vegetables Fatty Fish- Salmon, Tuna and Mackerel
Fruit – full of important vitamins, blueberries are known as a super fruit Water – Continually hydrate especially during study periods Avoid refined sugars, processed carbohydrates, caffeine and saturated fats

19 Sleep & Stress Management
A healthy nights sleep is very important Preference is between 10pm and 6am A little stress is good, focuses the mind, makes us work but too much stress is unhealthy. Help manage stress Use the advice given already

20 Learning Style Students can learn in all of the above ways or may use an element of each - mind maps integrate all three
