What is Co-production? Dedicated client staff working alongside Pega or Partner resources Client team members participating actively in projects Co-producers being mentored on Pega by Pega experts Co-production is solution delivery accomplished by dedicated client staff working alongside Pega or Partner resources Client team members are active participants. They Provide meaningful contributions to the delivery effort Enhance their Pega skill set Co-producers are mentored on Pega by Pega experts (Pega Consulting, Partners, or client resources) to Gain proficiency over time Ultimately become individually self-sufficient Learn the “art of the possible” with Pega This comes from Pega Academy’s “Introduction to Pega’s Delivery Approach 2018”, the “Be Journey-Centric and Adopt Co-Production” lesson. Personal note: I like the way that source framed co-production as delivery accomplished first by client staff … ownership and accountability like that is all-to-often missing on projects.

The path to individual self-sufficiency
Learning Guided Mentored Independent Self-Sufficient Learning - Pega Academy courses etc. to learn a topic Guided - Heavy reliance on applying the skills and hand holding from Pega SSA Mentored - Next level where with some mentoring the resource can apply the skills to get the work done Independent - Essentially repeatable application of specific skills - e.g. Data Transforms - all done good Self-Sufficient - Level of maturity at the level across all skills to state that they can perform the role and responsibility

Typical path to co-production: technical track

Over that time the Pega Mentor’s involvement decreases as the co-producer’s skill increases. Productivity is estimated to be the amount of work the co-producer can complete in a given amount of time as compared to the amount of work that an experienced Pega resource holding of an advanced Pega certification (such as Pega Certified Senior System Architect) would complete in the same amount of time. Note that a Co-production Lead will be responsible for developing and tracking the enablement plan. The Pega Mentor role is responsible for actually mentoring co-producers.

Co-production assumptions
New Co-producing Solution Architects and Business Architects Are committed to the project full-time Will complete appropriate training before project commencement Will register, take courses, and achieve Pega Certified System Architect or Pega Certified Business Architect certification (as appropriate) within 3 months of project commencement One or more experienced, certified Pega mentors will provide coaching and mentoring for all new co-producers Client will execute the Co-production enablement plan as agreed to with Pega. Once the plan is agreed to, any proposed changes to the Co-production enablement plan will be handled via the governance change control process. All client staff working as Pega developers are committed full time and must complete appropriate training before project commencement. Client staff will register, take courses, and become certified in Pega courses within 3 months of project commencement. There will be an experienced, Pega certified mentor for new trained staff. Client will execute the Co-production enablement plan as agreed with Pega. Once agreed, any proposed changes to the Co-production enablement plan will be run through the governance change control process.

This version can typically be used later in the project, when the co-producers are individually self-sufficient not only in their Pega skills but in their individual enablement as well.

Exercises: Developing an enablement plan
Instructor’s notes: For the most part, these short exercises are only intended to get the participants comfortable with the content and format of these two spreadsheets. Nothing really deep … except for the fact that expanding their timescale from a week per row/column to a month per row/column allows the participants to think a little about what kinds of expectations might be reasonable of co-producers. The expectations that the participants include in their plans could be worth some time in discussion after the spreadsheets have been completed.
