SAFEGUARDING What is safeguarding?
What are your legal or regulatory requirements? What do you need to do to comply with those requirements? What do you do when things so wrong?

What is Safeguarding? Safeguarding is what you do to protect people who come into contact with your organisation from abuse or mistreatment of any kind Your beneficiaries or service users Your staff Your volunteers

Sexual harassment, abuse or exploitation Negligent treatment Physical or emotional abuse Commercial exploitation Terrorism or extremism Bullying Health and safety Abuse of a position

Legal requirements for schools, care facilities and hospitals Regulatory compliance – possibly with one or more regulator Governance and best practice Inspections

How do you Comply? Recognise that it applies to your organisation
Put the appropriate polices and procedures in place and make them public Risk register and managing risk Review, update and manage those polices and procedures Training, education, lessons learned, refreshers Create an environment where concerns can be raised Handling allegations and making reports

DBS – standard, enhanced or basic Check references and question missing parts of CV Check eligibility to work in UK Check not disqualified from acting as a trustee or senior member of staff Obtain health checks Check proscribed organisations

What Happens when things go wrong?
How do issues come to light Is there a culture of being open and responsive Consider what immediate action is needed such as police or medical intervention Look at your internal procedures – did they work could they have been better? Risk register – an event has happened how does that effect or risk regime Call in the regulators Make a serious incident report to the Charity Commission

How do you deal with the person/s affected Your messaging and any communications to stakeholders Spokespersons if needed How to handle an investigation How to minimise or prevent it happening again
