1 Model for transporter activity for mammalian manganese absorption, hepatic uptake, and endogenous excretion. Model for transporter activity for mammalian manganese absorption, hepatic uptake, and endogenous excretion. The transporters required for manganese uptake by enterocytes at the apical membrane have not been established. FPN facilitates manganese efflux from enterocytes into the portal circulation. Hepatocytes use ZIP14 as a major transporter for manganese uptake. ZnT10 is responsible for manganese secretion into the biliary excretory pathway. ZIP14 facilitates systemic manganese transport into enterocytes at the basolateral membrane. Without normal ZIP14 function, manganese is diverted to systemic circulation and tissue uptake, particularly the brain. Tolunay Beker Aydemir et al. J.
