These programs are key to protecting workers and reducing the costs of workplace injuries. Safe + Sound includes awareness-building, educational opportunities, and activities to help you be safe and sound at work.

The Value of Safety and Health Programs
Workplace injuries and illnesses affect workers, their families, and your bottom line. Issue To help American businesses improve their safety performance. Goal Every workplace should have a safety and health program. Solution It is clear that a poor safety record can affect workers, their families, AND the business, but what is often less clear is how to get started improving your performance. Employers may want to improve their safety performance, but don’t know the next step to take. Our goal is to help businesses like yours change your approach to safety and health management in order to protect your workers and realize the many other benefits that these changes can bring to your business. Through Safe + Sound, we are encouraging employers like you to keep their workplace safe and sound by implementing a safety and health program. Safe + Sound provides many resources to proactively identify and manage workplace hazards before they cause injury or illness. No matter where you are on the road to developing a program in your workplace, we want to make it easy for you to take a step in the right direction.

How Do Safety and Health Programs Benefit Your Business?
Prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. Improve compliance with laws and regulations. Reduce costs, including significant reductions in workers’ compensation premiums. Engage workers. Enhance social responsibility goals. Increase productivity and enhance overall business operations. Every workplace should have a Safety and Health Program
Safe + Sound is rooted in the belief that every workplace in America should have a safety and health program that includes the three core elements of management leadership, worker participation, and a systematic approach to find and fix hazards. Management leadership: Top management sends the message that safety and health are critical to business operations and to business sustainability. Worker participation: Workers are encouraged to report hazards and are engaged in finding solutions. A systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards: Workers and managers identify hazards and put controls in place before these hazards cause injuries and illnesses. There are a number of frameworks that can be used to implement an effective safety and health program. Some of these include: OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs, ANSI Z10, ISO 45001, and individual state regulations. Safety and health programs can be successfully used in any industry and can be adjusted to suit any workplace. Safe + Sound organizers include the American Society of Safety Professionals, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, CPWR-The Center for Construction Research and Training, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the National Safety Council, and the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association. Kick off a new or energize an existing safety and health program Proactively identify and manage workplace hazards before they cause injury or illness Improve the bottom line Participating in Safe + Sound will not only help show your organization’s commitment to safety and health, but it provides an opportunity to launch or renew your efforts to proactively identify and manage hazards in your workplace before they cause injuries or illnesses. If you already have a program, you can use Safe + Sound to reaffirm your organization’s commitment to safety, highlight the activities your organization does as part of your program, celebrate your successes, or initiate new activities or commitments to take your program to the next level. If you don’t have a program, you can use Safe + Sound to start exploring activities your organization can do to take a step in the right direction on safety and health, or make commitments to safety and health that you can implement throughout the year.

Be Safe and Sound all year round
Safe + Sound can help businesses like yours by: Providing ongoing communications that give insight on how your business can establish or maintain a safety and health program. These communications often offer resources you can adapt for your workplace or business model. Offering quarterly milestone activities to help implement or improve safety and health programs in your workplace. In 2019, Safe + Sound is focusing on the core elements of safety and health programs at specific times of the year – management leadership in March and April, finding and fixing hazards in May and June, and worker participation in October and November. This includes highlighting free resources that can support businesses building their programs and challenges that provide opportunities to put ideas into actions.

Develop Your Program Many free resources to develop a safety and health program are already available – and new resources are added regularly. Top resources include: 10 Ways to Get Your Program Started – a list of actions that any business can take to launch their program. Making Safety Personal – engaging activities that can increase participation in safety and health programs by getting managers and workers thinking about and discussing what safety on the job means to them. Safety Walk-Arounds for Managers – guidance to help managers and business owners conduct safety walk-arounds to identify hazards in the workplace and communicate with workers about hazards in their jobs.

Take the Challenges Complete actions to put management leadership, finding and fixing hazards, and worker participation into practice. Share your progress on social media. Receive a virtual challenge coin. Challenges are structured around each core element to help businesses put ideas into actions. The challenges will feature checklists of items to help businesses more fully develop their safety and health programs, and will encourage businesses to share their progress on social media. Our management leadership Take 3 in 30 Challenge is available now. A find and fix challenge will be launched in June and a worker participation challenge will be launched in November.

Celebrate Your Safety Successes
These opportunities lead up to Safe + Sound Week, a nationwide event, being held August 12th – 18th this year, when businesses host events or activities to celebrate their safety successes. More information will be available in July 2019 to support participation in the event.

Additional OSHA Programs and Services
OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) On-Site Consultation OSHA Challenge OSHA also offers a variety of other programs and resources that can help your workplace stay safe, including: OTI Education Centers: a national network of non‐profit organizations authorized by OSHA to deliver occupational safety and health training for all levels of workers. The Voluntary Protection Program: recognizes employers and workers in private industry and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries. Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program: recognizes small business employers who have used OSHA’s on‐site consultation program services and operate an exemplary injury and illness prevention program. On-Site Consultation: offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to small- and medium-sized businesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. On-Site Consultation services are separate from enforcement and do not result in penalties or citations. OSHA Challenge: provides participating employers and workers an avenue to work with their designated Challenge Administrators to develop and/or improve their safety and health management program through mentoring, training, and progress tracking.
