1 Anthropometrics, Physiology, psychology and environment
Ergonomics Anthropometrics, Physiology, psychology and environment NATIONAL 5: DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE

2 Lesson starter Stand in the class in order of height. Then in order of shoe size, then in order of hand size, finally in order of hair length. This should introduce the concept of differing sizes.

3 What impact ergonomics has in design.
Today I will be learning about… What impact ergonomics has in design.

4 To understand Anthropometrics role in design
Using the following objects decide what human dimensions (e.g. – hand width, standing height etc…) must be considered when designing them. Also state whether the dimension would be 5%, 50% or 95%. Write your answers in your jotter along with the name of the object, which you are considering.

5 To understand the bias Psychology creates in the look of a product.
Task: Jot down your ideas of the age, sex, economic background, marital status and any other info you can think of which would represent the person (s) using the above items. Your answers will be compared with others in the class during teacher feedback.

6 Understand how the Environment an item is used in can influence design
The environment is one of designer’s main considerations when it comes to designing a product. The environment is more or less where the product is going to be used, and without consideration can lead to the product being completely ineffectual TASK: Use the following items to outline what considerations of materials properties, colours, you would have to think of in their design A: A Garden gate B: A power drill C: A mobile phone D: A dinner table

7 To understand how Physiology can affect the use of a product in design
Physiology is the way in which strain is placed on the body due to interactions with a product. As a class discuss what would you see as the main physiological considerations in the design of a kitchen cooker?

8 Consider all Ergonomic information regarding one product
FINAL TASK: Describe all ergonomic issues surrounding the following item for both adult and child.

9 Success criteria By the end of the lesson I will be able to… Identify the difference between the 5%, 50% and the 95% anthropometric details Describe 4 aspects of Ergonomics. Use everyday items to identify Ergonomic considerations.
