1. What is foreign policy?
Foreign Policy involves issues relating to the US and other (foreign) countries.

2. What are International Organizations?
International organizations involve governments
or people from different countries working
together to solve an issue that crosses borders.

4. Foreign Policy
Foreign Policy is a country’s actions, words, and belief towards other countries.
The main goals of our foreign policy are to:
 protect America and Americans
 support economic growth and human
rights around the world
 increase support for American values like
democracy and freedom
Most often, the President and executive branch initiate foreign policy responses to world events and work with Congress to carry out those responses.

5. Foreign Aid
Foreign Aid is the help or assistance we give other countries, usually through our Department of State.
The main goal of our foreign aid is to create friendships abroad and foster trading partners.
Foreign aid comes in many forms. The most common are:
 economic, like money
 military, like soldiers helping after a
disaster
 advice, like how to create a democracy

6. Military
Military is the country’s troops led by the President who is called the Commander-in-Chief.
The main goal of our military is to prevent war and protect the USA.
The Department of Defense is made up of the following branches:
 Army
 Navy
 Air Force
 Marines

7. TREATIES
Treaties are a formal agreement between countries that must be followed, like laws.
The President is responsible for negotiating and signing treaties.
All treaties must be approved by 2/3 of the Senate.
An example:
Countries form an alliance through signing a treaty. This treaty says that if one of the countries is attacked, the others will step in to protect each other.

8. Intergovernmental organizations Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)
Organizations that are formed between
governments. They are based on formal agreements between three or more countries
that have come together for a specific purpose.
Groups that work to solve problems around the world but are not connected to any government.
(They may have members that come from government organizations.)

9. United nations (UN)
An intergovernmental organization. Their goal is to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among
nations and
promote
international
cooperation.

10. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
An intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North American and European countries. The organization implements the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on 4 April 1949.

11. The European Union (EU)
An intergovernmental political and economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily
in Europe.

12. The World Health Organization (WHO)
A nongovernmental organization and specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health.
It was established in 1948 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

13. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies:
A nongovernmental organization focused on international humanitarian work with approximately 17 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide. It was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human
beings, and to prevent
and alleviate human
suffering.

14. The World Bank
A nongovernmental organization and an international financial institution that provides loans to countries for capital projects. Their goal is to reduce world-wide poverty.
