Détente – period in the 1970s during which there was an easing of tensions between the United States & the Soviet Union Perestroika – restructuring of the government & the economy in the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev in the mid-1980s Glasnost – period of openness called for in the mid- 1980s by Mikhail Gorbachev in the Soviet Union Voice – to tell people your opinion or feelings about a particular subject

The Fall of Communism Problems in the Soviet Union Collapse of the Soviet Union 1 – Soviet controlled Communist economy could not compete with the Capitalist economy of the US. 2 – Soviets were unable to produce enough goods to keep people happy. Most of their money went into military defense. 3 – Soviet people were angry at the government for losing the war in Afghanistan. 1 – Soviet people demanded changes in their government. Mikhail Gorbachev* brings major reforms to the Soviet Union. -Glasnost* – allows more rights & greater freedoms for the soviet people Ex: allowed to criticize the government -Perestroika* – allows some private ownership of businesses, hoping more goods would be produced. 2 – In 1991, the weakened Soviet government granted freedom to 15 republics it had controlled.
