2 Outline 1) Sm18 facilities and occupancy 2) Bloc4 facilities
3) Proposed layout of the new station in SM18 4) Equipments and Support summary 5) Scenario to install and start new station 6) Conclusion

3 1) SM18 facilities and occupancy
10 operational horizontal benches to test LHC cold masses (except triplets, D1, D2)

4 Cryogenic installations in SM18
- One helium liquefier shared between RF and benches (15300l/day) - Dewar reserve of liters - 2 Roots pumping groups provide 18 g/s and 7g/s cooling power to cool down at 1.9K - 10 CFB for 1.9K operation (2 used for spare parts) - Controls based on : Benches : PLC (Siemens), supervision Pc-vue Cryoplant : ABB

5 CFB & Horizontal Benches Occupancy

6 2) Bloc4 facilities 3 cryostats for 1.9K operation and 1 for 4.3K

7 Cryogenic installations in Bloc4
- One helium liquefier 3000l/day (140l/h) - Dewar reserve of 2000 liters - Roots pumping group provide 1.6 g/s cooling power to cool down at 1.9K - 3 cryostats for 1.9K operation and 1 for 4.3K - Controls based on PLC (step5) and supervision (Pc-vue)

9 3) Proposed layout for new station in SM18

10 Equipment of the new vertical test facility
20 kA (for 2013, Fresca) 2 possibilities - Share power supply with cluster A (60 V , 20 kA) (warm cable length > 60m ) - Displace 15 kA of cluster C then replace by new platform installation  electronic racks, cryogenic racks, small power supplies on the platform  cryogenic pipes, powering cable and bus bars distribution under the platform

11 The installation of 3 cryostats will allow to perform all tests foreseen in the next 5 years
Cryostats coming from Block 4 : 1) “Diode” cryostat (to test diodes and current leads) 2) Long station (To test corrector magnets…..) . New cryostat : 3) Preparation of shaft for the new Fresca cryostat (test of magnet in 2013), and possibility to install provisionally Siegtal or Auxiliary cryostat if necessary Diode cryostat Fresca cryostat Long cryostat

12  Long station installation
Dig an enlarged pit of 1.5m deep Cryostat shaft of 4m For magnets up to 3.6 m (MQY, MQM) Reason : 1 m less for SM18 crane

13 Towers to hang the inserts for each cryostat
Available area to install later string facility (60 m) Test of SC links and « supercritical » magnets with still to define distribution box (for leads and cryogenic lines)

14 4) Equipments and Support needed
Cryogenic facilities  TE/CRG Acquisition & control (incl. PLC)  EN/ICE Quench protection electronics TE/ MPE) Cooling water installation  EN/CV Power-supply  TE/EPC Powering cable EN/EL Magnetic measurement  TE/MSC Installation platform  EN/MME Civil engineering  GS/SEM

15 5) Scenario to install and start new station
For installation of 3 cryostats station Common infrastructure installation : Time needed minimum 9 months , cost about 1 MCHF - Pit & shafts , platform installation , electrical distribution , power Cables - Instrumentation and control (as for the CFB benches) - Cryogenic lines - Power supply 20KA + aux , switch (new) and dump resistor…. Move the Long cryostat (cost about 120 kCHF ) : - Proposal : recover Block 4 cryo. distribution box - Implications : ST-Long unavailable for 3 months (To do in 2010, before series of LIUP correctors) - Diode tests (and other vertical tests) unavailable for 6 months (compatible with general planning) If necessary installation of Siegtal for USLarp models in the pit to dig for Fresca cryostat for 2013.

16 Why move Block 4 Vertical Cryostats to SM18
- Block 4 balloon limits full tests of MQY, therefore LIUP1 and NbSn magnets with larger stored energy - Fresca II test needs a new (large) pit - ST_Aux no more necessary (according to present requests) - Stop Refrigeration plant saves ab. 300 kCHF / year - Increase of efficiency by staff regrouping

17 6) Conclusion Need to keep 5 clusters active in SM18
Installation in SM18 of 3 vertical cryostats will allow to perform all tests foreseen in the next 5 years Room for either supercritical helium station or LIUP1 String Test should cover future tests in the next 5 years Necessary to move block 4 to SM18

18 Cost and resource Cost : Resource : - Common infrastructure  1 MCHF
- Long_Station  120KCHF - Diode_Station 100KCHF - Fresca_Station  500KCHF Resource : - 1 full year for 4 (5) persons
