Magazine Ad Activity Designing well-controlled experiments is the key to successful science. Students will use an advertisement of a product to test the claim of the ad with an experiment. Individually in the Notebook, every student will create and complete the Experimental Graphic Organizer. As a Group on the poster, there will be the Experimental Graphic Organizer, Procedures, and a Drawing of your Experiment. (Use Handouts to complete assignment)

Experimental Graphic Organizer
Title Page 24-25 Turn notebook sideways Use your ad to fill in the boxes Independent Variable(s) Paragraph that describes the IV and how it is measured. What is the IV? How will it be measured? What SI Units will be used? What are the IV groups that will be tested? How many times will you repeat the trial? Dependent Variable(s) Paragraph that describes the DV and how it is measured. What is the DV? How will it be measured? What SI Units will be used? Example: The product to be tested Shout stain remover Pg. 25 Hypothesis If…. Then… Include the specific relationship between the IV and DV. Example: If shout stain remover is applied to wine stains before the wash cycle, then the wine stains will disappear. Constants List the parts of the experiment that must be kept the same from trial to trial in order to ensure that the results change due to the IV. Be specific. Example: critically specific measurements or concentrations. Control Group Describe the control group and explain why it was picked as the control group. How does it determine a baseline for comparison? Ex: the group the experiment is not conducted on Pg. 24 Quick Sketch of Lab During Data Collection Clearly represent the variable and constants. Label and write a caption

Scientific Method Revisited
Observation: Some type of phenomena Question: Stated in a way that it could be investigated scientifically Hypothesis: A suggested testable explanation for the phenomena written in an "If..., then..." format Plan out experiment: A list of procedures (think: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich video) Analysis: Analyzing the collected data and then present it in graphs and tables Conclusion: Must also address the original hypothesis; was it accepted or rejected?

Which group does not receive the treatment? The control group Variables: Only ONE independent variable Variables that stay the same: Constants; ex.: applicator, models, environments, etc.
