Reading and phonics Reading *Children will have an opportunity to change their book each morning in the corridor. We won’t always comment but a minimum of once a week. *Little and often! Comments about the children's reading in their reading records are greatly appreciated. Phonics The children should use their phonic knowledge to help them with their reading. Their prime approach should be to sound it out and blend the sounds back together.

Topic: If you go down to the woods today, will you get a big surprise?
London Topic Map Term One and Two Topic: London! To kick start the new year we will begin by learning about the big city of London! The children will be exploring the key features of a city, the history of the city and important people from the past. If you have any resources that could support us with this topic, please help us by sending them in. For example if you have any maps, photographs or even models linked with our topic then please let us know. Thank you :) Geography We will begin the topic by exploring all the exciting places that make London such an interesting place to visit. We will be using iPads, books, maps and models to explore the key features of a big city. We will then take a walk around our own local area and compare aspects of Alveston to London. History The children will begin by exploring the events of the Great Fire of London and thinking about how the houses have changed over the years to become safer. We will also be learning about a significant individual from the past; Florence Nightingale. Design and Technology We will be using our knowledge of mega structures in London to design and build our own bridges, monuments or important places to visit. We will be exploring how we can make our designs stronger, stiffer and more stable. Maths and English Maths We will warm our maths brains up by practising our counting, reading and writing of numbers to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning from 0 and from any given number. We will begin to develop the skills of identifying one more and one less. We will then explore addition and subtraction within 20 and develop our skills to understand number sentences using a range of symbols (+ - =). The children will develop their confidence to use a range of resources to support their learning such as bead strings, number lines and 100 squares. Literacy Throughout the year the children will be developing the skills of early writers such as capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will continue to build upon the skills that the children have learnt whilst in reception such as cursive letter formation. The children will be developing their speaking and listening, reading and writing skills through a range of story types and style of writing. During the first two terms we will be looking at traditional stories such as The Three Little Pigs. To link our learning to our topic we will also be watching, reading and listening to the adventures of Paddington Bear. There will even be an opportunity to write instructions to help us make sticky marmalade sandwiches! Science Across the two terms we will be exploring seasons, the weather and some key events that happen within each season and month. Art We will begin by creating some season themed art. We will then study an artist in detail and create own our master pieces! RE and PSHE The children will develop their understanding of Christianity by exploring the creation story. We will also be thinking about how we can be a good friend. PE We will have two PE sessions a week which will begin by developing basic game– playing skills such as throwing and catching. We will then move on to gym. French and ICT Mrs Kossmann will be taking the class on Wednesday afternoon for French and ICT activities. Music Mrs Jolliffe will be taking the children on a weekly basis for music lessons. They will be exploring sound through a range of different activities. WOW Day We will be having our first wow day on Thursday 10th September. We have some great ‘London’ themed learning planned. Home learning Reading: Regular reading recorded within your child’s reading record. Red warning words: Please see the little red warning word book for more information. Phonics files: The files are a way for your child to revisit the digraphs and trigraphs we learn in school. Each digraph/grapheme has it's own picture and rhyme to help remember it. The children have the opportunity to practise reading real words that are fully decodable using their sounds. The alien nonsense words require the children to sound them out using their phonics skills. This will support them with the phonics screening check. PHONICS WORKSHOP Sumdog: Please remember to log on to sumdog where children can play fun, educational maths games to support their learning within school. Optional Home Learning: We encourage the children to bring in any resources or projects linked to their current topic. For example they may wish to go to the library to borrow books, paint a picture or build a model. The children can then share their learning with their classmates and display it with our topic display.
