Artistic Rendering Final Project Initial Proposal
Jeremy Shopf September 14, 2006
2
Problem Paintings are static!
Can we change composition of the scene, properties of existing objects or can we insert new objects without disruption? Artists use varying colors to shade objects in a scene to convey mood
3
Extracting surface orientation
Need geometry of an object to acquire lighting model and to apply new properties or change the lighting “Image-based Material Editing” [Khan Et Al. 2006]
4
Image-based Material Editing
Uses pixel intensity as an estimate of distance from the viewpoint Apply a bilateral (edge-preserving) filter to the object to remove high frequency detail and specular highlights Generate depth map from pixel intensities Calculate surface orientation from depth values

Examples

Extracting Appearance
Object is painted a different color based on the lighting and surface orientation at that point Examine all pixels at a given orientation w.r.t. the light and get the average color Repeat for all orientations Fit the colors recorded for all angles to a smooth 1D function of the angle Use to relight the object or apply to another object
8
Limitations Homogeneous materials No indirect light or occlusion
Consistent shading Smooth strokes
