Rule 3 – Periods, Time Factors and Substitutions
Section 1 – Start of each period First and Third - Kickoff Coin Toss determines who kicks off Second and Fourth Switch ends and continue the game

Rule 3 Cont. Section 2 Playing time
Varsity 12 minutes; 6-man, 10 minutes Sub-varsity JH 6-8 minutes Freshman/JV minutes Half-time Varsity 11-man 20 minutes Varsity 6-man 15 minutes

Rule 3 Cont. Section 2 Extension of period
A period cannot end on an accepted penalty A period would be extended for offsetting fouls If a touchdown is scored with no time on the clock, the extra point try would extend the period.

Rule 3 Cont. Section 2 Timing Devices
40 second clock vs 25 second clock Game clock Back judge is responsible for the clocks in varsity games

Rule 3 Cont. Section 3 Timeouts 3 per half
Length – shall not exceed 1 minute and 30 seconds Starting and stopping the clock On snap (FR-49) On the ready to play (FR 49-50)

Rule 3 Cont. Section 3 Situations Injury timeouts
Injured player – allow all the time needed Helmet comes off Runner – Stop clock immediately Others – Stop clock after play is over Unless helmet came off as a result of a foul, player must leave for 1 play. May stay if a charged time out is granted.

Rule 3 Cont. Section 4 - Delays Delay of game (FR-54)
Section 5 - Substitutions More than 11 on field, break huddle, etc. and snap is imminent, illegal substitution – 5 yard penalty

Rule 4 Ball in Play, Dead Ball, and Out of Bounds
Section 1 – Ball in Play –Dead Ball Ball becomes alive when legally snapped or legally free-kicked. Ball becomes dead according to the rules or when the official sounds his whistle or signals the ball dead.

DON’T DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if you do – Blow your whistle loud Options for the offended team: Running play: Where ball was when whistle was blown or replay Loose Ball: Where possession was lost or replay Pass or kick: Replay

Rule 4 Cont. Ball declared Dead (FR 57-58)

Rule 4 Cont. Section 2 – Out of Bounds Player out of bounds
Touches anything, other than another player or game official, on or outside a boundary line. The pylons are out of bounds. Held ball out of bounds Player in possession of the ball touches the ground or anything else out of bounds or on or outside a boundary line.

Rule 4 Cont. Section 2 Loose ball out of bounds
When loose ball touches the ground, player, official or anything else out of bounds, on or outside the boundary line. Out of bounds at forward point Give forward progress to where the ball was when it was declared out of bounds

Summary Remember to keep an eye on the clock.
Blow your whistle, when it should be blown. Be alert at the sidelines, encourage your team to keep it clear so you can do your job.
