Bonding
2
General Check In -Quiz Grades, will be returning on Friday, but grades are in -Make ups by Thursday -Project Reminders
3
Objectives -I can define the three types of bonds - I can list the key characteristics of bonds -I can differentiate the three types of bonds
4
Ionic Bonds -Unequal sharing I.e. one loses electrons Other gains electrons -Bonding between a metal And a nonmetal
5
Ionic Bond -Metals always have….. -Nonmetals always have… ***Overall charge of the molecule is neutral
6
Unique Trait of Ionic Bonds…
-In a solvent will dissolve And will break up -What happens to the charges?
7
What is the goal of forming an ion?
8
Review question -Is Hydrogen a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid?
9
2. Covalent Bonds -Sharing of electrons -Bonding between two nonmetals
10
How is an ionic bond different from a covalent bond?
11
Metallic Bonding
12
Metallic Bonding -Bonding between two metals -“Sea of electrons”
13
Why are metals such good conductors?
14
Which bond is the strongest? Which is the weakest?
15
What are the properties of compounds formed by bonds?
-Melting Point -Boiling Point -Conductivity -Other characteristics: Metals and Ionic..
16
1) Research the three types of bonds
What do I need to do? 1) Research the three types of bonds -You need the following information: -MP if high or low -BP if high or low -Conductivity: if high or low (under what Conditions, for JUST IONIC) -Other: Ionic- Brittle and crystalline structure Metallic- Ductile, Malleable, Luster 2) Make a chart/diagram/overview that compares and contrasts the three different types of bonds 3) Check it, pick up Homework sheet
17
Exit Slip: 2/13/19 What are the key characteristics used to differentiate different types of bonds? Which bond is the strongest?
