1 DROP YOUR BUSINESS CARD IN THE BOX FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A SONOS PLAY:3
STRATUS TECHNOLOGIES Software Defined Availability & OpenStack for an Always-On World OpenStack Summit - Atlanta Thank you for joining us today. My name is Dave LeClair from Stratus Technologies and we are here to talk about Stratus’s Cloud solution. 2 Availability Experts for an Always-On World
Stratus is an availability solutions company. We have been the leading expert on application and systems uptime for over 34 years. We have a long history of innovation in availability. The company started as a hardware server company and built the platform that became the de facto standard for Fault tolerant servers protecting mission critical workloads. It is highly likely that at some point today you will have a transaction or rely on a service that depends on our platforms. Several years ago utilizing virtualization technology, we created the world’s first truely software FT solution that supports multithreaded applications running on commodity servers. That solution was recently updated and is now based on the KVM hypervisor and released as our everRun enterprise product. However, when it came time to consider cloud availability, we knew the time had come to build the next generation of availability solution. 3 The Next Generation of Availability
Beyond simply protecting from hardware failure Beyond simply building a resilient cloud control plane Beyond Software workload protection We knew we could bring value to OpenStack simply by bringing our Software HA and FT technology to the cloud. This would allow us to create an easy to install and operate, resilient Control plane and provide a hypervisor for mission critical workloads in the cloud. We saw that this is what others were doing. They were bringing existing clustering technologies like Pacemaker to OpenStack and building HA clouds. However, those are technologies that have been around for many years. They are complex to setup and are not very flexible or elastic. We knew our technology would provide a better base but we also saw that there were other challenges to cloud availability. Protecting the control plane and workloads were only the first step. We knew that with cloud we could build a much more powerful solution that goes beyond simply protecting from hardware failure. That goes beyond simply building a resilient cloud control plane. That goes beyond simply protecting workload instances. Stratus Copyright

4 The Need for Software Defined Availability
It was time to create a Software Defined Availability solution that looks at the entire availability challenge and creates a holistic solution for availability. Something that understands your applications’ SLAs; Understands the BC and DR requirements of your environment; understands all the dependencies an application has on other applications in how it is constructed. SDA balances the need for IT to maintain control over their environment, particularly for applications that have special considerations like compliance, with the business application owners need for agility and flexibility. SDA takes advantage of the elastic and dynamic nature of the cloud to provide a very flexible solution using intelligent orchestration A Holistic, Flexible Approach to Availability Stratus Copyright

5 The Need for Intelligent Orchestration
Security IT Control Compliance Availability However, the Stratus Cloud solution goes beyond just availability. Using a solution that provides intelligent orchestration combined with SDA, we can also solve numerous other challenges as well. We can more easily move legacy workloads to the cloud without refactoring them. We make sure those applications that have specific compliance or performance requirements run where they should in your infrastructure. We can create flexible policies for orchestration that manage applications through their entire lifecycle Policy Orchestration App Dependency Legacy Apps Performance Stratus Copyright

6 Demo I would love to go into details on all these examples. However, given our limited time, at this point, I am going to ask Ed Brennan to walk through a few use cases in a live demo and invite all of you to stop by our booth for a more detailed look.
