How many here today don’t want to know what’s coming next?
You want to be surprised! Why do many of us want to know what lies ahead in the future?

Forewarned to be Forearmed for Faithfulness

Luke 21:5-38 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 ‘As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.’ (19:44) 7 ‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?’

8 He replied: ‘Watch out that you are not deceived
8 He replied: ‘Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am he,” and, “The time is near.” Do not follow them. 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.’ 10 Then he said to them: ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

12 ‘But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you
12 ‘But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me. 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.
7
20 ‘When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfilment of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 ‘There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars
25 ‘There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’
9
29 He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig-tree and all the trees
29 He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig-tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 ‘Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
10
34 ‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.’ 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.

B. Four Discipleship Dangers
According to Jesus, his disciples would encounter the dangers of fear, deception, worry and complacency, each one a threat to their faithfulness to him. Although we are already well into the timeline Jesus sketched, we face these same dangers that threaten our faithfulness to Jesus.
34
Confidence God is in Control
How do we face these certain dangers and not succumb to becoming unfaithful? Confidence God is in Control
35
Jesus’ Sketched Timeline Jesus’ Warning of Four Discipleship Dangers
Jesus’ Absolute Word ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.’ Vs 33 Just as prophesied The disciples were persecuted They gave supernaturally enabled testimony Jerusalem and Temple destroyed Explosion of Christianity throughout Gentile World
36
C. Jesus’ Absolute Word i. Path to Expect
These things must happen first Vs 9b This is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written Vs 22 Until the time of the Gentiles is fulfilled Vs 24
37
C. Jesus’ Absolute Word i. Path to Expect
Jesus’ absolute Word that forewarns his disciples about the necessary painful things they will encounter forearms them to remain faithful through those very things. Knowing that the dangerous path ahead is an absolutely necessary part of our caring God’s plan of salvation gives disciples confidence that God remains in control, confidence that inspires continued faithfulness.
38
Rom. 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
39
ii. Pain to Avoid In the 60’s C.E. many Jews caught up in insurrection led by false messianic leaders and lost their lives Jerusalem’s destruction by Rome’s reprisal was also a divine judgment for rejecting Jesus and God’s saving purposes (Luke 19:44) Jesus’ absolute Word warns the disciples not to get on this bandwagon and suffer in judgment with them
40
ii. Pain to Avoid Jesus’ Word warned disciples to avoid Jerusalem’s painful judgment; Rome’s annihilating reprisal for an insurrection led by deceptive messianic figures who falsely claimed God’s support in throwing off Roman rule. Avoid unnecessary pain as disciples by not getting on the bandwagon of movements led by those who falsely claim they are fulfilling God’s will.
41
God’s absolute Word helps us to identify as false what others claim to be God’s will. What modern day bandwagons falsely presented as God ordained, that if jumped on, could be detrimental to faithful discipleship? What needless pain have we experienced because of our choices and actions to do what we though was the right thing when the Spirit was whispering ‘Don’t do it’?
42
iii. Promises to Embrace
16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. (Protection/Preservation) 2 Cor. 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Dan Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Vs 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict
43
iii. Promises to Embrace
Jesus’ absolute Word gives promise of preserved life (protection, deliverance, life after death) to overcome fear, and promised enabling to give irrefutable testimony to overcome worry. Embracing the Lord’s absolute promises helps keep disciples faithful through the times of fear and worry that they will encounter on their own personal timeline that precedes their final redemption.
44
What are some additional biblical promises we can stand on to help us remain faithful to Jesus when fear and worry raise their ugly heads?
45
iv. Prayer to Engage 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. Deceptions Worry Fear Complacency
46
iv. Prayer to Engage Jesus’ absolute Word expresses the necessity of watching out for and encountering the expected dangers to come with prayer for whatever is necessary to remain faithful until Jesus’ redemptive return. Watching out for expected dangers to faithfulness and responding to them with prayer requesting God’s grace and strength is indispensable in remaining faithful to Jesus throughout life.
47
Complacency during the delay before the tribulations indicating the End’s nearness is a very real danger for Canadian disciples that they need to be on guard of and pray against in order to remain faithful. How can we specifically intercede for one another so that we will not become victims of complacency, of returning to life as business as usual?
48
Summary: Disciples who heed Jesus’ absolute Word gain the confidence, knowledge, promises, and prayer’s released power to overcome fear, deception, worry, and complacency to remain faithful till Jesus’ sudden redemptive return. R.I.P. Sudden END
