4. Emotion management and the workplace
We are going to read a short extract about emotions in the workplace.
Read the text and discuss these questions with your partner.
What is the difference between feelings and emotions?
According to the text, in Western societies, how important is ‘managing your emotions’? Why?
What is the difference between exchange value and use value?
Is it emotional labour or emotion work which have use value: why?
Do you currently work in a job which requires emotional labour? Can you think of some examples?
How do you think your ability to manage your emotions could impact on:
your university studies
your job role?

5. Task 2: reflective writing
How skilful are you at managing your emotions?
Write a reflective paragraph which refers to managing emotions, specifically emotional work and emotional labour, with respect to your skill of working in groups.
The paragraph should:
Reflect on your skill of team work
Reflect on your skill of managing your emotions
Refer to the academic source on page 1: summarise, but do not quote. You should also use Harvard in-text citation.

Connect the theory to examples from your team-working experiences
