1 Plant Processes

2 Photosynthesis A process unique to GREEN plants in which SUGAR is manufactured from WATER and CARBON DIOXIDE in the presence of CHLOROPHYLL. LIGHT energy drives the CHEMICAL reaction. OXYGEN is released during the process as is WATER VAPOR.

3 Four Items Needed for Photosynthesis
CARBON DIOXIDE from the AIR it enters through the STOMATA WATER from the ROOTS it is carried by the XYLEM CHLOROPHYLL is present in the LEAF in the PALISADE PARENCHYMA LIGHT ENERGY from the SUN

4 Three Items Produced from Photosynthesis
GLUCOSE carried through the PHLOEM to different areas of the plant OXYGEN released through the STOMATA WATER VAPOR released through the STOMATA

5 Rate of Photosynthesis is Affected by:
light INTENSITY TEMPERATURE concentrations of CARBON DIOXIDE in the ATMOSPHERE

6 Photosynthesis Chemical Equation
CO2 + H2O + chlorophyll + light energy >>>>>>>>>> C6H12O6 + H2O + O2

7 Respiration The process that permits living CELLS to obtain ENERGY from the breaking down of GLUCOSE. Respiration uses OXYGEN and ENZYME catalysts to oxidize SUGAR to CARBON DIOXIDE and WATER. ENERGY is produced. This process does not create ENERGY just changes it’s FORM.

8 Three Items Needed for Respiration
GLUCOSE from the PHOTOSYNTHESIS process OXYGEN from the AIR it enters through the STOMATA WATER from the ROOTS it is carried by the XYLEM

9 Three Items Produced from Respiration
ENERGY is used by the plants CELLS to carry out GROWTH, REPRODUCTION and cell MAINTENANCE CARBON DIOXIDE released through the STOMATA WATER VAPOR released through the STOMATA

10 Respiration Chemical Equation
O2 + H2O + C6H12O6 (enzymes) >>>>>>>>>> H2O + CO2 + energy

11 Transpiration The loss of WATER in VAPOR form from a plant is TRANSPIRATION.

12 Transpiration Most transpiration occurs through the STOMATA

13 Transpiration is Affected by:
Temperature Light Humidity Wind

14 Wilting Point: Temporary - can recover with watering
Permanent - can not recover with watering

15 TROPISMS: TROPISMS are a plant’s response to something in it’s ENVIRONMENT.

16 TROPISMS: PHOTOTROPISM is a plant’s response to LIGHT. PHOTOPERIOD is a plant’s response to the length of LIGHT it receives. CHEMOTROPISM is a plant’s response to CHEMICALS. PHYTOTOXICITY is a plant’s NEGATIVE response to CHEMICALS. GEOTROPISM is a plant’s response to GRAVITY.
