1 It is a brief way to write very large or very small numbers
What is it? It is a brief way to write very large or very small numbers Form looks like: 3.4 x 10³ 1st factor is greater than or = to 1 and less than 10 2nd factor is power of 10

2 Writing in Scientific Notation
Write 86,400 in scientific notation: First factor: 8.64 Power of 10 indicates how many decimal places to move 8.64 x 104

3 Write in scientific notation
7.5 x 10-4 Supercomputers can now reach speeds of over 35,600,000,000,000 math operations per minute! 3.56 x 1013

4 Writing in Standard Form
Also called “decimal notation” Write 5.18 x 106 in standard form: Move decimal 6 places right: 5,180,000 Write 8.7 x 10-8 in standard form. Move decimal 8 places left:

5 Write in scientific notation
80,000,000 8 x 107 4,195,000 4.195 x 106 1 x 10-9 25 2.5 x 101

6 Write in standard form 6 x 105 600,000 1.2 x 10-7 7.72 x 10-4 5.03 x 109 5,030,000,000

7 Multiplying and Dividing with Scientific Notation

8 Write the answer in scientific notation.
(5 x 104)(7 x 105) = (5 x 7)(104 x 105) = (35)(104+5) = 35 x 109 But we’re not done yet…

9 Write the answer in scientific notation.
35 x 109 35 is not between 1 and 10! So… move decimal and add one more place for 10 3.5 x 1010

10 Write the answer in scientific notation.
(8 x 102)(5 x 102) = (8 x 5)(102 x 102) = (40)(102+2) = 40 x 104 = 4 x 105

11 Write the answer in scientific notation.
(9 x 104)(4 x 105) 3.6 x 1010 (1.5 x 103)(2 x 105) 3 x 108

12 Write the answer in scientific notation.
(4 x 109) (8 x 105) = 0.5 x 109-5 = 0.5 x 104 = It’s not done yet…

13 Write the answer in scientific notation.
0.5 x 104 .5 not between 1 & 10! Move the decimal to the right, and subtract one from the exponent. 5 x 103

14 Write the answer in scientific notation.
(6 x 1013)  (2 x 107) = (6/2) x =3 x 106 (1.2 x 102)  (4 x 108) = 0.3 x 10-6 = 3 x 10-7

15 The End
