1 Data Part 2

2 Linear and Non Linear Graphs
Graphs reveal relationships- Trends and patterns Two types of line graphs: Linear: The data points follow a straight line Non-linear: Data points do not follow a line

3 Identifying Trends and Making Predictions
There are two variable related to each other. As Time increases, Speed decreases (Non-Linear Trend)

4 As distance Increases so does the time.
(Linear Trend)

5 No Trend Graphs : What is happening on the y axis has no relationship to the X axis

6 Slope of a Line The slope of a line represents how steep the line is.
The slope of a line tells you how much “y” changes as it relates to “x” Slope = Rise Y - y Run X - x

7 Choosing the Right Graph:
Line graph. Line graphs are used to track changes over short and long periods of time. When smaller changes exist, line graphs are better to use than bar graphs. Line graphs can also be used to compare changes over the same period of time for more than one group. Pie Chart. Pie charts are best to use when you are trying to compare parts of a whole. They do not show changes over time. Bar Graph. Bar graphs are used to compare things between different groups or to track changes over time. However, when trying to measure change over time, bar graphs are best when the changes are larger.

8 Pie Graphs What conclusions can you draw from each graph?

9 Bar Graphs Examine each graph. What conclusions can you draw from each?

10 Calculating Density and Volume
Density: Volume: (Rectangular Prism) Density = Mass (grams) Volume= L x W x H Volume ( milliliters) Try: mass = 16 grams Length = 10 in, W= 4 in H = 7 in Volume = 4 milliliters Density = ? Volume =

Pie Graphs Table: Favorite Type of Movie Comedy Action Romance Drama SciFi 4 5 6 1 Comedy Action Romance Drama SciFi TOTAL 4 5 6 1 20 4/20 = 20% 5/20 = 25% 6/20 = 30% 1/20 = 5% 100% First, calculate the percentage of each by dividing each by the total participants. Comedy Action Romance Drama SciFi TOTAL 4 5 6 1 20 4/20 = 20% 5/20 = 25% 6/20 = 30% 1/20 = 5% 100% 4/20 × 360° = 72° 5/20 × 360° = 90° 6/20 × 360° = 108° 1/20 × 360° = 18° 360° Next, calculate how many degrees each pie should be:

13 Finally, Use your protractor to make the pie shapes
