Context and 2nd Timothy Context of 2 Timothy: Letter to an evangelist 2 Timothy 2 – Qualifications/obligations 2 Timothy 3 – Directions: how to work 2 Timothy 4 – Charge to the evangelist 2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.

Context and 2nd Timothy Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of Truth Timothy 2:15 2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.

Context and 2nd Timothy Application of diligence The effort and exertion to learn KJV: “study” – painstaking application You won’t learn the Bible “here” alone Diligence is outside the assembly too The latin word STUDIUM means zeal, painstaking application
9
Context and 2nd Timothy Purpose of diligence To present yourself to God unashamed To be a workman YOUR PURPOSE: service to God
10
Context and 2nd Timothy Rightly dividing and accurately handling You may handle the Word of Truth You hold the Word in your hands You speak it with your words Do you handle it accurately? 2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.

MIS-Handling of the Truth
2 Timothy 2:23, 3:5-9 - Foolish and ignorant disputation - Always learning, never coming to know truth - Having a form of godliness without its power - Like Jannes and Jambres - Error becomes manifested 2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.
12
MIS-Handling of the Truth
1. Foolish and ignorant disputation Colossians 2:23 - Disputes that have no value to the hearer - Will it make you a better Christian? Col 2:23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
13
MIS-Handling of the Truth
2. Always learning, never coming to know James 1: Do you apply what you study? - Do you study with a purpose of action? Jas 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
14
MIS-Handling of the Truth
3. Having a form of godliness without power Romans 1: The power of the Word is salvation - Many know the Word but are unsaved Ro 1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."
15
MIS-Handling of the Truth
4. Like Jannes and Jambres Exodus 7: Artificial knowledge - Causing others not to believe Ex 7:11 But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. 12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.
16
MIS-Handling of the Truth
5. Error becomes manifested James 3: Bitterness, envy, confusion, etc. - Works of the flesh Jas 3:13 ¶ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
17

19
