Challenge 1 Matching variable generation and demand
Weather patterns and the variability of solar and wind power will strongly influence the electricity system. With only the current renewable technologies, the system will not always be able to meet demand. Consumer average year System average year Energy demand Solar PV generation Temperature Energy demand Solar PV generation Wind generation Zoomed in on specific period Zoomed in on specific period January (example) January (example)

Challenge 2 Timely realisation of grid capacity
5 A matter of strategic planning and timely alignment between the market and grid operators. Low voltage grid Not all new renewable generation or consumption require additional investments in the grid. However, when it does, planning and location selection requires alignment between producers, grid operators and consumers. High voltage grid Requires timely clarity on where, when and how much new large scale electricity generation or demand will be realised. Distribution grid 2 - 3 years* Transmission grid infrastructure years Realisation time Realisation time Small scale solar / wind 1 year Large scale wind projects 5 years for projects that require strengthening of the grid
