Do Now When the bell rings
After the bell (2 min) In your seat: With pen/pencil With Notebook With Handout Packet from last class on your desk Silent and ready for Do Now Respond to the following quote: Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. ~Eleanor Roosevelt Still needs Do Now

Agenda Do Now (5 min) Warm Up: Electron Config. Practice (10 min)
Electron Config. Exit Slip (10 min) Notes: Intro. To Bonding (25 min) Independent Practice (20 min) Exit Slip (5 min) Closeout (2 min)
3
Refresh: Electron Configuration
3 Steps Determine # of electrons Determine starting place Fill in the orbitals by moving left right (like reading a book)

3 Steps Determine # of electrons Determine starting place Fill in the orbitals by moving left right (like reading a book) 3 Steps Determine # of electrons Determine starting place Fill in the orbitals by moving left right (like reading a book) Model by counting off the electrons before writing the configuration Write the electron configuration for Ga Write the electron configuration of Cl
5
Warm up: Electron Config.
Write the electron configuration for As 1s2 1s22s2 1s22s22p6 Write the shorthand configuration for Si 1s22s22p63s23p6 Which element is correctly paired with its electron configuration? Write the electron configuration for O-2 Which one of the following is not the electron configuration of atom of a noble gas? Ga [Ar] 3d12 4s2 Ni [Ar] 3d10 Ni [Ar] 4s23d8 Cu [Ar] 3d10 4s1 Warm up: Electron Config. Work with your small group to answer these questions If you are confused, complete steps 1 and 2 before asking for help, then raise your hand If you finish early, find 1 person who does not understand and explain to them
6
Exit Slip How? What? (5 min)
C – No talking H – Raise hand A – Taking exit slip M – In seat P – Completing exit slip without notes and turning in If you finish early, summarize what you learned at the bottom of your notes OR answer today’s guiding question
7
Introduction to Bonding
Objective: Predict and differentiate between the bonds that will form between two elements Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for all Group a elements
8
Guiding Question Why is road salt used to keep roads from icing over?
9
Definition: A bond that exists between a metal and a non- metal; valence electrons are transferred from the metal to the non-metal Ionic Bond M + N.M.
10
Covalent Bonds Definition: A bond between two non-metals; electrons are shared
11
Ionic v. covalent I Do You Do MgCl2 NaF NO2 CO2 H2O ZnCl2 K2O LiCl
12
Lewis dot structure The model we use to demonstrate bonding
Dots represent valence electrons Follow the Octet Rule: Atoms want 8 valence electrons Full and balanced at 8 Lewis dot structure
13
Steps to create a Lewis Structure
Write out the atomic symbol and determine the number of valence electrons Place a dot to represent one valence electron Continue adding dots clockwise around the symbol; do not pair until 4 single dots have been placed
14
Lewis diagram for Oxygen
Write out the atomic symbol and determine the number of valence electrons Has 6 valence electrons
15
Lewis diagram for Oxygen
Place a dot to represent one valence electron
16
Lewis diagram for Oxygen
Each consecutive dot should be placed around the symbol in a clockwise fashion
17
Lewis diagram for Oxygen
Only start pairing valence electrons after four single ones have been placed
18
Cl - IONS Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for Cl-1 Remember:
+ = Lose electrons - = Gain electrons - Cl
19
You try (3 minutes) Create the Lewis Diagrams for: Carbon Argon S-2
20
Activity: Independent Practice
What? How? C – None H – Raise hand A – Writing electron configurations M – None P – Recoding answers on left page, head up, reading and thinking through all questions, discussing with group 15 minutes Discuss for 5 minutes Verify & Review
21
Exit Slip How? What? (5 min)
C – No talking H – Raise hand A – Taking exit slip M – In seat P – Completing exit slip without notes and turning in If you finish early, summarize what you learned at the bottom of your notes OR answer today’s guiding question
22
Forgetting to stretch is a bear.
Closing What are 3 key takeaways from today and yesterday? Complete the Independent Practice and/or Stretch in your Electron Config. packet
